Marist is a team still trying to find itself.They are 1-8 and no one expected that.Magarity did a pretty good job recruiting and adding a juco player and red shirt back but they expected a .500 team at this time.
But losing causes problems.McClurkin their 6'8 inside player was suspended for the Fairfield game.Parks the frosh suspended another game.Monigan and Ellerbee benched the 1st half of another game last week.Missing classes,late for meetings,etc.
Magarity is a no nonsense coach.He takes no shit from anybody.He's 6'6 275 body tells it all.
Marist has lost to E.Mich,Coastal car, and Vermont at home.Their last win was on Dec 4th vs Siena.
Their star player Young has a sprained ankle today.he will play but has been benched.Lyr the 6'7 fd avg 10 pts and 6 bds.He has a total of 23 pts.Unreal.Can't shoot,can't rebound.Where did he go? Well sitting right next to Dave thats where.
Monogan is the kid with the bullet in his jaw.He started out on fire.But he is in a slump.A 1/1 player with nice moves but out of control.He's 8-43 from the 3.Thats 18%.He will not take anymore 3'.Ellerbee is their best shooter and 21-46 from the 3.McClurkin is the juco kid who is their only inside threat.But he gets into foul trouble every game.Handy the Morman comes in and is soft.He likes to run to the elbow for that 10 ft jumper.Problem is there no one to rebound.Monogan is 5'9 and the secong leading rebounder.
Same problem as last yr.No post players or post defense.No depth there.When McClk goes out there in trouble.
Marist is coming off a 50 pt loss to Ga Tech. Dave used this week to get refocused.This team is better then there playing.
But in comes the Lumberjacks.Just what the doctor did not order.
NAU last yr was a +10 dog and came to beautiful Poughkeepsie and beat Marist 68-65.
NAU is No1 in the nation in making 3's.They have made 99-258.Thats only 38%.They rank 50th in %.But this team hoists them up as soon as they got off the plane in Albany yest.They were shooting as their luggage was going around on the conveyer belt.
Golub their best player, the other nite hit 10-13 tre's vs San Diego.He's 12-17 in last 2 games.He's a 6'5 kid who will shoot over the Foxes 1-2-2 zone.Kodaik Yazzie is another gd that is 17-44 from the 3.Bond is a 6'7 kid with range.Boykin is a 6'7 frosh that can score.Fergunson and Feurbach are 2 solid gds that can go downtown.Add Hayes the 6'8 workhorse inside who also has 20 bl shots.The problem with NAU is there is no true pt gd.Everyone is a 2,3 and 4 players.No 1 or 5's are improvised.
They beat UNLV last week in Vegas by 1.
Teams with inside attacks will hurt NAU.But marist doesn't have that.I watched the Vermont-Marist game last week.Marist's perimeter defense was so bad.They had to play zone because of Coppenrath who is 5th in the nation in scoring.But Copp who is 6'10 moved to the FT line and hit jumpers there also.
One of the Foxes biggest weakness's is perimeter defense.In 2 losses at home E-Mich an Coastal both have great 3 pt shooting teams.Well in comes the Lumberjacks with a better shooting team.
Foxes will have to play man/man vs NAU.Cannot sit back in a zone.But Foxes are a weak m/m team.
I like the Lumberjacks to beat my Foxes today.
