Live in a new apartment building with paper thin walls. Bedroom abutts right up against a guys alarm clock that goes off at 5am every fvcking morning. Not his fault, but I need a solution. I have never bought any sort of wall hanging, but need to know what I could buy that would be thick enough and big enough to make a tiny difference in the noise coming through.

I would go to a local carpet store and buy a remnant that is the proper size for your wall and thick enough to absorb noise. That way you can cover the whole wall in question. Remnants are cheap too -- generally less than 1/2 price.

I've been there....

1. Get a fan. It creates "warm noise" that drowns out others.

2. Move your bed. Go to the other side of the room. Consider moving the bed sideways, it might not the the ideal arrangement , but it is well worth it if you get more sleep.

3. ask the nieghbor to lower the volume. I know that you yanks don't like to talk to your nieghbors but I would ask him nicely to turn down the volume or move the clock to the other side of the room. If he doesn't buy him a new one that he can lower the volume. Yes, I said buy him one. It's a $30 investment in not waking up every morning at 5.

4. put anything between you and the wall in question. I used a rug that had a sun on it that I bought from a vendor who was stationed at an old out of business gas station. If you have an armore or any other type of sizeable wooden fuuniture park it in front of the wall. Wood soaks up noise.

5. decorate. Paint, hang pictures, anything on the wall.

6. Get an alarm clock and set it for 4:15 and let it go off for 15min. every morning for a week. Nothing is worse that missing that last hour of sleep. Give him a week and then stop, see if he gets the hint.

7. job. get that phat job with Merrill that pays 200K a year and buy a house.
