Can you guys please help me with a computer problem? Well, problems? First a few weeks ago, my cd rom drive went bad, need to replace it that I do know. What I have no idea about is what Dell has diagnosed as a "bad power supply" and apparantly I need a new one. Agent took the tower to some guy he knows that said it is the power supply and the motherboard. I asked a systems administrator at work who said start with the power supply first, because he didn't know how the first guy would know if it's the motherboard too unless fixing the power supply didn't fix it (which he hasn't attempted yet). The guys at Fry's said many things...that Dells will only accomodate Dell parts, nothing eslse, that X motherboard would fix it, that X power supply would work. We haven't opened or attempted to do anything with the motherboard yet, we wanted to start with the power supply first. Agent attempted to put it in, but we must need somekind of cord modifier or connector b/c we don't have a plug that will plug into the hard drive as the bad one had been. (the possible proof that Dell has conspired to require only Dell parts???)

I just don't want to spend a whole hell of alot more money than I need too to fix this...I figured ordering parts from Dell would be much more. And at this point, the conflicting info is getting perplexing. And by the way, the guy Agent took it to won't be fixing it either way. We can never get ahold of him and when we finally got the PC back after he "looked" at it, one of the memory cards was missing (and we are attempting to contact him to get our memory back!). That oversight, along with his suggestion to put a used motherboard in a 1500.00 computer makes me worry that we'd get it back with his turkey sandwich left in the RW drive. Do you guys know something that you could share with me? Any help would be appreciated - I can't do anything in my own office and it's driving me nuts. Dell said it as the power supply, they nevere said anythign about the motherboard. I'll just order the power supply from them if that is what any of you think should be done.

What are the symptoms of the problem?

If it is indeed a power supply issue I have to say that ANY power supply you buy at an electronics store, provided it's EXACTLY the right size will do. It's only job is to deliver the right amount of power throughout the computer and should not be proprietarial.

While many other parts may need to be dell specific, I highly doubt that a power supply is one of them. I've been wrong before though.

Don't take it to a discount retail outfit like BestBuy or Circuit City either, if you have a CompUsa around that would be the best idea.

I have run across different types of power supplies, I know older compaqs use a different connector, not sure about dell. What I have done in the past is search ebay under computers, and find a dell power supply should be pretty cheap. One quick check you can do, is plug in your old power supply, if the fan on the back of it does not come on, it is indeed dead. Good Luck

Most likely you will need to order the same power supply that is in the unit. You have a problem with the physical size of the power supply as well as any connetions to the motherboard. The connections to the hard drive should be the same.

Good luck.

You can run it externally if it's just a size issue.

THE guys from fry's is correct, dell computers can require specific power supplies and specific motherboards. Agent has my phone number and I have worked on dell's before, if you need help have him call me and I will help out

The symptoms are: when I went to turn it on, it didn't respond with power at all. It was just dead. And for the several weeks before this, everytime it was turned off all the lights on the front of the tower flashed and beeped for aehile before stopping.

when Agent got it in, the size of the actual power supply seemed okay, and he got it plugged into everything except the hard drive. That was the one plug that didn't seem to be the right size.

We do actually have a CompUSA around, we could go there. Thanks for all the advice. Hope we get it worked out soon. Agent is on a mission to get it taken care of today while I work on a paper on his laptop!

No problem Agent, glad to get the computers up and running again. For those wondering we reseated the memory on the system and then went and bought a power cable that goes from a standard power adapter to a serial ata.

Good luck at the Colts game tomorrow, and the forum knows anyone in Indy that want's pc help I am available LOL

I also love this place
