Hellah, If your buddy has broadband (cable or DSL) I recommend for about $200 setting up a wireless network. That way, both computers can share files, as well as an internet connection, a printer, etc.

I use Linksys to connect 4 computers in my house and it works great.

Write me at walleyek@attbi.com if you need additional help.

Good luck.

Hellah10,

I can help ya out. First...the two computers your buddy has. How does he access the internet? Does he have broadband (cable modem, DSL)?

I would recommend what Walleyek said. Setting up a home network is pretty easy.

If it's just two computers with no internet connection then you could use a serial cable transfer, but that's kinda complicated.

Email me: redking (AT) 1box.com <--- change number to "one" ;)

if you need more details :weed:

I dont' know what level of of technical proficiency you're at, but you can just get an ethernet card (goes in a PCI slot) for each computer, and get a crossover cable.

cards might run you 15 bucks each, and a cable for 5-10.

Now, if you're already this far, and you're just having XP/ME issues I can't help. But I know that doing like XP/95 is pretty easy.

I forget the exact steps, but it's pretty easy to make a folder/drive shared. It's one of the options if you right click on a drive in explorer and select properties (there should be a sharing tab).

So as long as both computers are hooked up and on, you should be able to transfer things back and forth real easy.

then he should just be able to run a cat-5 cable (I think that's what he needs) from each machine to the router, and run a "home network wizard" from each machine or something.

What, specifically, is the problem? Getting to the router? Getting the machines to recognize each other? Getting the disks shared ? Or just getting started? Is the ME machine connected to the router? I imagine he'll have one card for the broadband and one card to connect to the router.

If he's just getting started, here's a link about setting up home networks. This shows how each machine should be able to use the saem internet connection.

Again, if you're asking about conflicts between ME and XP, I don't really know. I think even Microsoft had the foresight to be able to make that work though.

If he still has the CD, he also ought to think about installing XP on the machine with ME. It's much better.

Try something like "Network Connections" in the control panel. Or just start fishing around... XP (I'm not as familiar with ME) has a home network connection wizard that should guide you through the process. I think it might even have you make a disk that goes in the ME machine. It might even ask you things like "is this machine or another machine connected to the net?"

Once you can talk to the other machine, you'll have to set a disk or file up for "sharing" like I mentioned earlier.

I can't remember the exact steps I went through to get my XP and 95 machines to talk. If no help here, just start surfing. I think there are lots of resources on the net.
