when i moved from nyc to houston back in 1973, the friends i left behind laughed and thought i was crazy, as they envisioned the old west movies with people carrying guns in their holsters and riding horses.

now, i get the feeling that people perceive nevada and its surroundings as being pure vegas, full of gambling and prostitution. many fellows i have met say no way. yet it seems to be a wide spread perception.

will you guys clear this up, for my benefit as well as others? can a family lead a normal life away from sin city, yet within an easy ride from it?

thanks,

pepin,

Lived in Vegas for ten years, leaving in 92'.

Still go back frequently to visit friends. Vegas is a wonderful city full of orange barrels on streets under construction. A price you pay for all the growth, no matter where you live.

Wonderful place to grow a family and for retirement too.

Plan on moving back when I retire. Only time I went to the strip was when guests were in town. Very normal, growing city.

Great town, still call it my home town!

The only thing that ever ticked me off was mothers (4 kids in a grocery cart) paying with food stamps, and stopping to play the slots on the way out.

Every city has a bad side. Love Vegas! Left for personal reasons that had nothing to do with gambling.

Place changes all the time and those who live there now can relate better than I.

thanks, kc

i imagine you still have other options if you don't necessarily want to be in vegas proper.

yeah, the mom story is not pretty. i was there once and saw a few people miss their flight at mccarreon? because of the slots at the terminal. but then, that is vegas.

i will probably end up near there when and if i finish here in panama. i will set up a business there to keep me and the wife busy as well.

The one problem I understand that will slow vegas growth down. To many a blessing. Water.
They are getting close to a problem. No one speeks out loud about it. But it's there. I am not looking for a fight with anyone. I have a hunch a few you guys that live there know this already.

its different for us because we live in green valley, about 15 miles from strip.
master planed community,so its well kept nice grass and palm and big pine trees.
would not even know you are close to strip, still over 100,000 here but its better then the strip or in vegas, not many people live in vegas inless you have to not many choose to.i stay away from there except business to much traffic, its a over sized town with a city populatition. i could get around faster in miami, atlanta or orlando when i livied there. traffic sucks not enough space for growth and traffic.
and water is cheeper here and more useable then it was when i livied in the keys(fl).

KC, I happen to enjoy the orange barrels/cones it kinda brings color to this otherwise bland desert terrain (in the daytime).
Now the drivers in Vegas whoa Nellie thats another story. I CAN definitely do without them. The WoRsT drivers in the country. Hell even the Jamaicans (those who have cars) drive better than Vegans do.

Bored in Vegas ? Never....
Sneak over to North town and you may get lucky to take in a drive-by or our only remaining drive-in with 5 movie screens.
Just today on the way to work at 6am I seen 2 Hoes working Boulder Hwy, also see a man slap around his Alzhiemers stricken wife and and got to read about a woman who killed her mom a kept her body in a barrel (not orange) locked in a rental shed for 2 years.
Funny most of all of her family and some of the people that have come into contact with her are missing.
Vegas what a city!

On another note don't get caught dribbling a basketball or reaching for your beeper or be holding a Bible if a Metro cop is watching you. Yup you guessed it you will be dead in a instant.
Vegas what a city!

Want to get buzzed ?
Vegas is probably the Meth capital of the world. How else are you going to keep awake working the Graveyard shift ? (24 hour town)
A huh crystal meth and NO that isn't a womans name. Big problem out here.....
do it ....get hooked....lose everything you worked all your life for including your family. Yup I see it all to often.
Vegas what a fricken city!

Pep, thats McCarran Intl Airport the wifes worked there for about 12 years now. Oh she can tell you some stories

Lots of new master planned communities out here including the prestigous 7 Hills and a new one that all the "celebrities" are buying at in the SW area of the Valley. SOme of the positive things to do in Vegas and surrounding cities..
Besides blowing a wad in the casinos and blowing your wad on the the hookers. There is plenty to do here. Take in a nice outdoor play in the Mtns of the Spring Mtns. We have the Lake Mead which is #3 in the USA for scuba diving. Mt Charleston or Lake Tahoe for snow skiing. Shows/Concerts/Restuarants Vegas has some of the best.

I been here since '68 nice back then.
No traffic
No Gangs
Minimal drug activity

Yup every city has its bad side you just have to look for the good
(like in everything else)

Ps
Aside from the bad I have written (and No there is of course more bad) Vegas is a great place to live or I wouldn't have been here so many years. I stay away from the Casinos cause I worked in them so long. I rarely gamble cept for Sports betting but the is more of an investment for me than gambling.
wink.gif

I, like many others, have a boat and enjoy waterskiing and fishing. The plays in the Mtns are great. The "Titty bars" rock, don't go there too often anymore cept when the wife drags me out to them

I lived in Green Valley for a year and a half in 1994 - 1995.

I found it to be an enjoyable place to live. Like many places to live, it had its pros and cons. No state tax is great, plenty of job opportunites, tons of activities to participate in, etc.........

My three main complaints were:
1. Road Construction and traffic jams (much like everyone)

2. the DMV!!!!!!

3. People thinking Wisconsin was part of Cananda.

I believe it is a fine place to live and raise a family. It can be like any other city if you want it to be, or it can be Las Vegas if you want to visit the strip, usually when family or friends came into town.

I love to go back and visit and would go back and live if the opportunity came about. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for "the Pines" on Jessup Rd.

Senor Capper,

You tell it exactly like it was and is.

For you guys out there getting excited about the legal brothels just outside Clark County, well.........Some of those war horses working there should pay YOU for sex.

Djv, Your comment about the water shortage is a concern, but not immediate. There is still an ample fresh water source from the Colorado River. How long??

A fact that most of you living elsewhere can't fathom? My 10 yr old stove has been used 2 dozen times other than to boil H2O. Food good and inexpensive. However, "American Express--leave home without it."

Fletch, New services in town allows you to pay for people to stand in MV line. Leave blank check. $25 fee.
