Two key University of Nevada football players and one former player have been indicted on felony battery charges that they hit, kicked, struck and punched a 21-year-old Reno man in June.
Bench warrants were issued Thursday for Joseph Edger Bwire, Chris DeWayne Handy and John Anthony ?B.J.? Mitchell, all charged with a single count of battery causing substantial bodily harm, said Deputy District Attorney Gianna Verness.
The charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine, Verness said.
Handy, a starter at cornerback, and fellow sophomore Mitchell, the top backup to running back Chance Kretschmer, were suspended from the team Thursday, per athletic department policy.
The policy requires a student-athlete charged with a felony to be suspended until the resolution of those charges. Neither player will play in the Wolf Pack?s game against Hawaii on Saturday at Mackay Stadium.
