NFC East: Giant strides
(Aug 21)

Coaches win Super Bowls, not players. Not everyone subscribes to that maxim, but tell that to Baltimore, who won the big one without a quarterback. Brian Billick relied on defense and proved successful. Tell that to New England?s fans who won with a no-name team and a back-up quarterback, thanks to the coaching of Bill Belichick. Tell that to Tampa Bay fans who saw the effect John Gruden had on an already good team. He took them to the next level.
You get the point.
In Dallas, the hype surrounds their new head coach, the ?Big Tuna? himself, Bill Parcells. His image is plastered on billboards along North Texas highways and on the Cowboys? marketing literature. It seems to be working, because season tickets sales are up.
But will Parcells make ?America?s Team? great once again? For starters he is the first head coach Jerry Jones has employed with previous NFL coaching experience.
Already, Parcells has made one big decision. He has deemed there should be a status quo, keeping Chad Hutchinson at quarterback and he will be helped by having QB guru Sean Payton to guide him. Hutchinson has the leadership skills and though he is still raw, he should be more settled.
Wideout Antonio Bryant has plenty of talent and attitude to go with it. He will be forced to buck up his ideas now that Terry Glenn has arrived in town.
The running game is reliant on Troy Hambrick stepping up and slimming down, and if anyone needs improvement on the other side of the ball it is defensive end Ebunezer Ekuban.
The linebackers are undersized, something Parcells is not used to, but they play with heart and the defense is the strength of their team, ranking fourth overall last year.
Dexter Coakley is coming off a Pro Bowl season and Dat Nguyen is a force when healthy. The loss of Kevin Hardy to Cincinnati has been overcome by the arrival of Al Singleton from the Buccaneers, who is as professional as you can get.
Jamal Brooks will also be a big boost after he missed last season with a cracked fibula and fourth round pick Bradie James, who was a productive linebacker in college, will also contribute in time.
Dallas is still in rebuilding mode and they should be better for the arrival of Parcells, but they may still struggle to post a winning season if TradeSports bettors are to be believed. You can bet in-running on the outcome of the division and on individual games at the at the odds you dictate with TradeSports.
Ernie Accorsi, the New York Giants? GM, has done an effective job in helping bring in some good veteran talent and they have also had a productive draft.
Those who will be wearing Giants blue for the first time are running back Dorsey Levens, kick returner Brian Mitchell, punter Jeff Feagles, kicker Mike Hollis, snapper Ryan Kuehl and defensive end Keith Washington. The Giants had 11 draft choices as well, headed by William Joseph and Osi Umenyiora.
Levens will put pressure on Ron Dayne, who has not produced as expected and the running game has been shouldered by Tiki Barber. Levens? arrival will be a huge boost.
After such a promising rookie season in 2000, defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin needs to re-find that form after suffering a dip last term.
Wideout Tim Carter should also be productive and could develop into one of the Giants? leading lights if he has fully recovered from an Achilles? tendon injury, while Ike Hilliard has also recovered from injury and has looked better than ever in training camp. With NFL premier tight end Jeremy Shockley and one of the league?s best in wide receiver Amani Toomer, the Giants may be ready to take Philadelphia?s crown, especially since Kerry Collins is throwing the ball as well as ever.
Don?t forget, coaches win games, so look no further than Jim Fassel, who is rated as one of the premier play-callers in the NFL.
The jury is out on Washington. The Redskins have raided the Jets locker-room to bring in four players and both kick returner Chad Morton and wide reciever Laveranues Coles are massive upgrades.
Both Rod Gardner and new Redskin Laveranues Coles hail from Jacksonville, Florida. Both are coming off big years - Gardner had 71 catches for 1,006 yards and eight touchdowns. He became the first Redskin wide receiver to break the 1,000-yard barrier since both Michael Westbrook and Albert Connell did it in 1999. Coles, who put up 89 catches for 1,264 yards and five TDs, has speed, toughness and size. He is beginning to reach his prime and with Patrick Ramsey as the triggerman, the Redskins have much to look forward to.
They have boosted the offensive line with veteran savvy in the form of Dave Fiore and Randy Thomas.
Fred Smoot and Champ Bailey are one of the best cornerback tandems in the NFL but Washington have acquired an excellent back-up in San Diego?s Alex Molden and the arrival of defensive end Peppi Zellner (6-5 252-pounds) from Dallas, has made their off-season one of the most productive in the NFL. They could also vie for the NFC East title.
Philadelphia has lost some veteran talent, but have a new stadium to play in - Lincoln Financial Field is one of the finest stadiums in the NFL. Form worst to first, if you like?
While the offense has returned 10 starters, some of the new players will dictate the effectiveness of the unit. Donovan McNabb, Todd Pinkston and Duce Staley will again give defensive co-ordinators all the usual headaches, but Jon Ritchie, L.J.Smith and Billy McMullen will all have to contribute for this team to be effective again. Of that trio, fullback Ritchie could be the most effective. He is a strong blocking receiver and he will help the running game a lot.
Though Dorsey Levens has departed, Brian Westbrook will be given plenty of opportunity to carry the rushing load and as a returner now that Brian Mitchell has jumped ship to New York.
They have also added veteran punter Kyle Richardson and the draft picks look very solid as well.
Other additions include Mark Simeoneau, a middle linebacker who does not have the bulk, but he adds speed. They like him a lot, and the arrival of fellow linebacker Nate Wayne from Green Bay will help the blitz. He could be a fixture for years to come.
There is no question that the Eagles are still the team to beat in an ultra-competitive division, but the Giants may just have more improvement in them this year.
