What has the NFL become?
It has changed a lot since I've grown up. No more big hits. I know they are trying to protect players but that's what made he NFL so fun to watch when I was younger. The reason I played pop warner through college ball. We know what we are getting ourselves into putting on pads and a helmet. Why not go back to leather helmets?? It will lead to guys not leading with their heads anymore I guarantee that. Don't you think? Also it's a team sport and it's looking more and more like its every man for themselves. I witnessed it tonight. Most people watching care about fantasy football points. It's not team ball anymore. There are still a few teams with leaders that make it a team but after this new age of players come it will be every man for themselves. No teamwork anymore. These guys don't want to practice as long as they used and they don't understand it takes chemistry to win. Either that or they just care about the money. This game tonight was pathetic. The best player was Peyton Hillis and he was picked up Last week.

I think the specter of a bunch of men who can't walk or even remember thier own names has caused the league to rethink the "free for all" that was the game earlier. You might also have heard about the $600M they shelled out. Jim McMahon can't get to the grocery store and remember how to get home and many others can't walk etc. It was great to watch but it wasn't great in the aftermath for those who took the hits. The new rules may not always make for fun watching but they will help some guys live a normal life after they are done playing.

Its sucks, if not for betting who would watch this crap? I would rather watch college football but it's going the same route, trickle down theory. College players play harder for the most part which makes it better to watch.

The rules need to be called correctly, not like they are now. Actually they need to correct the rules, make hits a judgement call. Referees can and should be able to make the judgement call if they think someone speared or purposely fouled (truly targeted) another player and make the call accordingly, ejecting them etc. What should not be done is throwing a flag because it was close to this or that, or he made contact that was possibly above the shoulder pads.
The flags can be thrown when it's a cheap shot, for the most part you know it when you see it, there will be some you miss but that's life.

It's their choice to make it a lame game to play and watch. I know I would not want to play football under these rules, especially playing defense. You can't hit a QB low or even come close to hitting them high. That would have to be the most aggravating thing, going after a Russel Wilson or Manziel, knowing you have to slow yourself down to get a precise hit in the mid section of a quicker and slicker than owl shit running QB.

How many players are retired and are fine? It's like boxing. You play the sport knowing that you may get a few concussions. How many guys that wore the leather helmets back in the day are fine? Ya if you keep getting concussions and your choice is to keep returning to the football field after a while you may have some permanent damage. This game isn't full speed anymore. Everyone is going half ass to make sure they don't hit illegally. Soon it will be two hand touch football.

I agree with you. After last night debacle, the game isn't what it once was. It's a shame

It's amazing how people bitch about how the NFL is going downhill and is unwatchable. If anything, it is more exciting now than it has ever been. Bone-crushing hits may be down, but great offense is way up. Maybe you like the three yards and a cloud of dust style of play, but give me the aerial attacks of the masters like Brady and Manning any day of the week.

Most of the people complaining about the reduction in violence would be pissing their pants if they had to step foot on an NFL field. If you have ever seen these monsters up close, you would understand. I have been on an NFL sideline and seen the size of these guys in their pads. Trust me, you wouldn't be so quick to call the rule makers out if you had an understanding of the force these guys generate. Or maybe you would. There are sure a lot of people still around who would have been right at home in the Colosseum cheering for a gladiator to get torn apart by a tiger.

I've been around nfl players what's the big deal?
I've had my bell rung a time or two on the field but that's what made it great you could deliver those right back.
You're nuts if you like this pussified version of football, you can still have offense and allow good clean hits.
More pussy legislation is all that's happening in this world, Obama would seriously consider changing the Redskins team name too if he were owner, what's next a penalty if someone gets hurt,..... please.

I've played against college players who are now in the nfl. Nothing that scary about defensive backs. I wouldn't want to get hit blind side by a defensive lineman though. I am just saying this is what football is about. Big hits, big plays. I've been hit so hard going across the middle my sinus problem was fixed but that's what I risk playing football. The best QB is Peyton Manning and all he does is throw short passes all day long. When does he ever throw it deep? Barely ever. They are making this game so anyone can play it.

Octballer,

You wouldn't be saying this if your dad or brother became an invalid for life based on 2-3 years in the league. Many of the guys I was talking about didn't have a pot to piss in before the NFL paid out the $600M. The D backs turn into missiles with blind hits and just cause it's fun for you to watch doesn't make it a good thing for league. The sport is more popular than ever and the new rules have done nothing to hurt it.

Roger,
Obviously I can tell with your icon what kind of guy you are. Your a tennis player. You never played football growing up. You were one of those tennis players in high school that were probably too soft to play any other sport. It's okay. I have my opinion and you have yours.

No need for calling tennis players soft, baller. Anyway, judging by most of the chicks I see hanging around pro tennis players, I would wager to say they are pretty hard a lot of the time.

Back to the original premise, like Roger said the game is healthier than ever. These new rules will help to curb head injuries, and that is a very good thing. Five years from now no one will care at all about the new rules. They will simply be a part of the game. One day, you can be one of those old men who bitch to your grandkids about how soft they have it.

Hole in One with this observation!

Lawyer talk "assuming the risk" is what we all take in life!

Hey i been screamning at NFL for years stop with the ridiculous rules. You want to protect players for real Change the equipment make it absorb shock or hits or falls not give them out like two bricks coming together.

Also you could change every field turf to a son of flubber bouncy soft non freezing field but thats dumb Remove steel cages only have a shiled in front so no face mask can happen BAM one problem removed. NO hard shell plastic pads with steel rivets any more rubber inside with plastic connectors or aluminum dosent have to be thick rubber just 1/2 " or 1/4" thick shin pads knee pads thigh pads mandatory ankle supports also wrapped tight high over ankles to stop the sprains

Now players can play safely knowing injuries will be reduced do a fraction of what they are!
