I had a different sports experience Saturday that I had never been apart of before.

The NHL held their entry draft in Nashville and I attended. Nashville is a great sports city. We packed the house with 13,000 people for the draft. Toronto (last years host city) only had 6,500. But I digress, because I?m not here to bash.

I went downtown and muddled around the streets. The streets were packed. It was the longest day of the year (first day of Summer) and a beautiful day inside of that and people were everywhere downtown to see a hockey draft. Inside the Gaylord Entertainment Center (Where the Preds Play) they had The Stanley Cup along with the other hockey hardware, games and stuff for kids to play, autograph sessions, and merchandise stands. Beer and eats were available just like any game or event.

These ?kids? wanting to get drafted were all dressed up and their families, girlfriends and friends were all here to experience the event. What an event it was. The standing ovation for the ?role call? was amazing. In support and gratitude for bringing such events the crowd stood and cheered for 5 minuets after they called for Nashville?s attendance.

No one had a clue who any of these kids were. I did not know or recognize a single drafted player. I could of passed the #1 pick in the concourse just as easily as a random intern wearing a suit. But it didn?t matter. The emotion and heartfelt joy that showed on these guys (and their families) faces when they were picked was addictive. The warm feeling that penetrated the boisterous crowd was remarkable.

A proud city (hoping for an All-Star game with our showing), proud families, proud young men made my Saturday trip worthwhile. I stayed for the first round and would recommend the event to anyone who is a true sports fan. A positive experience all the way around and a pure sample of what is right with sports.

No, not a BIG fan. A fan but I don't wear a Preds Sweater around town (or even to a game for that matter).

I have worked in minor league hockey (ECHL) and I enjoy the sport for the sport. I have great respect for guys who fly around like they do with other 6-5 250+lbers on ice with sticks.

Hockey is a great sport and my post was just to reflect the Draft expirence and the great sports town I live in.

Dr. ? How was the draft recieved in your area? What happend? Why didn't y'all support it? I was raised thinking Toronto was the Hockey Capital of the world.

NashVegas definitely has great fans, and I think they're gonna make the playoffs this year, if they can get off to a decent start. The fans aren't spoiled like Colorado when they got a playoff team right away from Quebec, but they still come out and support the team and are as loud as anyone at their home games (at least that's what it sounded to me on TV:D). Maybe they'll be the Minny Wild of last yr;). The Preds were a real moneymaker for me the 2nd 1/2 of the season:D.

I loved the draft picks the Kings had, and I think they got a steal getting Dustin Brown with the 13th pick. They drafted their head coach Andy Murray's son in the 5th round, too. He's been compared to Kariya when he was younger, but it's a little too early to tell right now:p .

I was a little disappointed in the Preds draft choices. Suter (#7 overall) is still a kid and they are talking about him playing for the Badgers (Wisc.) next year. I was hoping to get some players who weren't projects. I was hoping for a now player rather than a "future star". Oh well. Maybe they can pull together a winning team. They have to find some Defense somewhere if they want to compete.

If they make it to the playoffs this city will go apeshit. This entire town in painted Baby Blue every Sunday during Football season. Nashville still supports thier teams even when doing bad (caveat Vanderbilt) but they rally around winners.

Nashville (which I love) is almost too supportive of their teams. When they got the Titans, it seemed like everyone from Nashville was instantly an NFL guru. My wife is from Nashville, so I have to listen to Titans (as well as Volunteer) crap all the f$$$ing time! The only reason I'm bashing this is because I have talked so much trash about Nashville teams that I can't ever convert fully--even when we move there! I will always have the Falcons in front of the Titans and of course the Bulldogs in front of the Volunteers.:p

Blazer--you are correct. Nashville is a great sports city! Now you need to get an MLB team.

Dawg- We (Nashville) are a little big city. I don't know if we could support a MLB team. The NBA went to Memphis due to this fact. The WNBA is looking to put a team here (mistake IMO). The econ. of MLB is screwed up and without some major work on thier labor agreement no Nashville-sized market can support a successful team.

I understand your alligence to your hometown team (Falcons) and I like thier new ownership but you need to leave the dark side (many meanings there) and come into the light.

They can keep the Vols in Knoxville, the Vols talk is less and less prevelant. The Titans are king here. I am not a Vols fan (Go UAB Blazers!).

If being too supportative is bad then call me guilty. The Draft was a free event and I was there and loved it. I think our zealous attitude is nothing but a good thing.

Dwag, while I have your attention answer this question. Why is Atl. such a bad sports town? Y'all have a shtload of ppl yet you can't fill a stadium for a Pennant race. The Thrashers are under supported and G-d help the Hawks. Y'all even had low attendance to the Olympics (maybe due to poor traffic planning but I digress).

Heaven, oh!!, this isn't it?!
Blazer,
The steal of the draft, Nashville Predators- Gary Suter. I know the kid and his dad. Don't know about "this year", but after Suter "suits" up(pun intended to show my wit, lol) they will be calling him "Smashmouth Suter". He absolutley controls the ice when he is out there, sort of like a Bobby Orr with an attitude. Think you'all will be impressed with him:) It does look like you will have to wait one more year though. His dad and the Badgers coach go back a long way from playing together, and that handshake that Gary's father had with Eaves when he was 12, was a guarantee he would play at Wisconsin one year. Nice to see Nashville taking on the worlds fastest game with exuberance:cool:

My opinion about Atlanta being a terrible sports town in terms of hometown support is probably based on the fact that the majority of people here are transplants (me being one of them from Kentucky). Atlanta is the place that the majority of college graduates from all over the South (and the North is getting a nice percentage here as well) go to. I know other big cities are hubs for new people as well, but you don't realize how the 25-34 age group runs this town (socially) until you live here for a while.

Also, my father-in-law correctly pointed out that Nashville is primarily an SEC town. In Atlanta, you have strong legencies to SEC, ACC, Big 10 (11), hell just about every conference. I think that leads to everyone having stronger hometown pride, with that hometown not being Atlanta.

BTW--I wasn't saying that allegiance is a bad thing, but when I have someone that has two Super Bowls as their extent of NFL viewership telling me why Steve McNair is the greatest QB ever, then I get a little tainted! Basically, you have a lot of football CRAZY people that could name two NFL QBs and think both should get automatic bids in the Hall of Fame.

Off the soapbox.

Dawg- Good point. But note that one does not have to grow up in a NFL city to know and watch NFL football. To your credit there are some crazed fans here that their heart is bigger than their brains.

Beantown-shove it up your ass. Don't come in fcking up my threat :topic: If you don't like the subject don't open the posts.

Franky- thanks for the info. Our local pundits are ignorant about minors and juniors hockey. I hope Suter will be there in time for us to defend the cup. OK, I know that's a stretch maybe make our second consecutive playoff run. :D

It is the hockey capital of the world, but when it comes to Draft's unless Torotno has the #1 pick, no one really cares..

Blazer, remember at least half of the season's seat holders are owned by corporations..

blazer--let me clarify. I'm not talking about NFL fans. I am talking about girls (and guys) that never watched a single NFL game except for the Super Bowl commercials acting like their John Madden.

Remember that I am from Henderson, KY. Not the sports capital of the world by any means.;)
