Pittsburgh and Chicago favored as closers

Two series underdogs did what most thought would formidable challenge to accomplish, win Game 5 on the road of conference semi-finals to take series lead. Now Pittsburgh and Chicago are poised with one more win, to advance to respective conference finals and still be very much alive for the Stanley Cup. Both teams will have home ice advantage with throaty fans looking to cement one more win.

For Pittsburgh fans, this is getting to be old hat. Though the players and uniform styles change, the Penguins know how to beat Washington. Pittsburgh will be looking for fourth series come from behind win in 17 years against the Capitals in Game 6. Pittsburgh punched across overtime goal in last contest and are 16-6 following a victory.

For the most part, the best Pens players have been at their best, with Evgeni Malkin having two goals and three assists and Sidney Crosby, five goals and three assists. Pittsburgh players and coaches realized that fear can be a great motivator.

?When you get down 2-0, that fear of not winning and not moving on is there,? coach Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said Sunday. ?We got the desperation in our game we needed and we?ve put ourselves in a situation to move on. The guys in that (dressing) room know exactly what?s at stake and what?s in front of us for Game 6. We expect a team that?s going to be real desperate ? a team that?s good, that?s dangerous, that?s going to be giving everything they?ve got.?

Washington was down 3-1 to New York Rangers in last series and found a way to win and they need to pull out another miracle to survive and their leader believes it?s possible.

Capitals star Alex Ovechkin has seven of Washington?s 15 goals in the series and says this about Game 6.

?Next game is going to be different,? Ovechkin said. ?It?s not over yet. If somebody thinks it?s over, it?s not over. ? We?re going to come back here (to Washington) again, Game 7.?

Washington is 16-4 revenging a loss where opponent scored four or more goals this season and is 7-1 in road games after three or more consecutive losses.

Sportsbook.com has made Pittsburgh -180 money line favorites to close out the series with total Ov5.5. The Penguins are 16-4 as playoff favorites and 11-2 OVER after two straight games where both teams scored three goals or more. Washington has lost four of last five as postseason underdogs and is 7-3-1 OVER as dogs.

In Chicago, the Blackhawks have moved within one win game of their first conference finals appearance since 1995 after handling Vancouver 4-2 in Game 5. Chicago took advantage of foolish Canucks penalty in the third period with the score tied at 2-2 and Dave Bolland scored the go-ahead goal.

Hawks captain Jonathan Toews said this about Game 6. ?We don?t want to get satisfied at all. We?ve got a huge opportunity and we?ve got to take advantage of it.?

The Hawks have won 13 of last 18 and are 5-1 in most recent encounters at the United Center.

Vancouver has to avoid taking unnecessary penalties and turn up the pressure on offense. In the last game, they total only 21 shots, including 10 the first 40 minutes. ?There?s no doubt in my mind that we can play better,? Canucks coach Alain Vigneault said. ?There?s a lot of room for improvement in our case.?

The Canucks are 12-3 in road games revenging a home loss versus opponent of two goals or more since the 2006-07 season and 5-0 the last two years. They are +155 money line underdogs with total listed at Ov5. Vancouver is 8-1 OVER when facing elimination in a playoff series and 9-2 in a road game when the total is five or less.

Chicago is 10-1 as -145 to -200 money line home favorites and is 12-4 UNDER in home games after a win by two goals or more this season.

The intense Game 6 action in Pittsburgh starts at 7 Eastern and 9 Eastern in Chicago. It promises to be quite a night of hockey.

(2) Washington Capitals (2-3) at (4) Pittsburgh Penguins (3-2), 7 p.m.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will get their first chance at clinching a spot in the Eastern Conference finals tonight, when they host the second-seeded Washington Capitals in Game 6 at Mellon Arena.

The Capitals won the first two games of this best-of-seven conference semifinal series, but the fourth-seeded Penguins have rattled off three consecutive wins to take a 3-2 series edge.

Pittsburgh took Games 3 and 4 on home ice and then earned an overtime victory on Saturday in Washington to become the first road club to win a game in this set.

The Penguins are 4-1 at home in the postseason after going 25-13-3 at the Igloo during the regular season. However, if Pittsburgh isn't able to clinch the series victory tonight, the clubs will meet in D.C. for a decisive Game 7 on Wednesday. The Pens are trying to make it to the conference finals for the second straight year after going all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals last spring before losing to Detroit.

The Caps were 21-15-5 as the guest this year and have dropped three of five road games in the playoffs.

Washington is hoping to avoid its past playoff history with the Penguins, as the team has twice lost a series to Pittsburgh after leading, 2-0. The first time was in 1992, when the Pens defeated the Caps in seven games, and the second occurrence was in 1996, when the Pens won four straight to take the series in six games. Also, in 1995, the Caps had a 3-1 series lead and wound up losing to the Penguins in seven games.

Four of the five games in this series have been decided by just one goal and the Pens are 2-0 when the battles have spilled over into OT. Kris Letang notched the overtime game-winner in Game 3 and Evgeni Malkin was the hero in Saturday's victory.

Malkin's power-play goal 3:28 into the extra session sent Pittsburgh to a 4-3 decision at Verizon Center. With one second remaining on the advantage he created, Malkin carried the puck into the right circle. On the backhand, he attempted a centering pass to a teammate, but Capitals defenseman Tom Poti, while diving to break up the chance, accidentally deflected the puck into the net on the short side.

"It's a big win. We did a great job at home and found a way to win today," Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby said. "The momentum swung back and forth through overtime but we got the last break. 'Geno' (Malkin) got some speed there down the wing. I think the defenseman tried to block it."

Jordan Staal, Ruslan Fedotenko and Matt Cooke also scored for the Penguins, who will now try to eliminate Washington for the seventh time in eight playoff meetings.

"The last one is always the toughest one, and we're just as hungry for it as they are," added Crosby. "We're lucky that we're going home for it."

Pittsburgh got the crucial victory despite the loss off defenseman Sergei Gonchar, who missed the contest with a leg injury suffered in Game 4 when Alex Ovechkin nailed him with a knee-to-knee hit. Gonchar, who was replaced in the lineup by Alex Goligoski, is officially listed as day-to-day and head coach Dan Bylsma did not offer much of an update on his defender on Sunday.

"Every day he's being evaluated," Bylsma told Pittsburgh's official Web site. "It's nothing more than that. He's (at Mellon Arena) and we'll find out more about him after his treatment. That's what I know."

Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 saves to post his seventh win of the 2009 postseason. He has a respectable 2.61 goals against average and .909 save percentage in 11 playoff games this year.

Ovechkin posted two goals and one assist for the Capitals, while Simeon Varlamov was the hard-luck loser despite a 38-save performance. Ovechkin is leading the NHL with 10 playoff goals this year.

Historically, Pittsburgh has dominated the Capitals in the postseason, winning six out of seven all-time playoff meetings between the clubs. They last met in the opening round of the 2001 playoffs and the Pens skated away with a six- game series victory.

Washington's only playoff triumph over the Pens came in six games during the 1994 conference quarterfinals.

The Caps did win three out of four regular-season matchups against Pittsburgh this year.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - There is every reason for the Pittsburgh Penguins to think it's over. They've won three games in a row, they're back at home, and they've done this so many times before to the Washington Capitals that it's almost as if they're following a script.

The players and the coaches change, the results don't. The Penguins go down two games, only to snatch back control with a late surge as a Mario Lemieux or a Jaromir Jagr, a Sidney Crosby or an Evgeni Malkin take change.

Happened in 1992, 1995 and 1996. It's happening again in 2009, despite all that Capitals star Alex Ovechkin is doing - and, with seven of Washington's 15 goals, there's almost nothing more he can do in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Except to pull off what would rank as the greatest escape act in Capitals history, one even better than the first-round comeback in which they trailed the Rangers 3-1 before they won three consecutive games.

Ovechkin says the Capitals can do it. He's almost promising they can do it. To him, a potential elimination Game 6 in Pittsburgh on Monday night won't end the Capitals' season, but will be the start of a comeback that their fans and the hockey world will talk about for years.

``Next game is going to be different,' Ovechkin said after the Penguins beat the Capitals for the second time in two nights, winning 4-3 in overtime on Saturday. ``It's not over yet. If somebody thinks it's over, it's not over. ... We're going to come back here (to Washington) again, Game 7.'

Ovechkin will need some help if he's going to pull this off, and that's part of the Capitals' problem. Ovechkin isn't getting any, and Crosby and Malkin are.

Of Pittsburgh's two big names, one is having a good series (Malkin, 2 goals and 3 assists) and the other a better-than-good series (Crosby, 5 goals and 3 assists). But the Penguins turned it around only when their second and third lines began scoring, with Ruslan Fedotenko getting a goal in each of the last three games, Jordan Staal scoring his first goal in 11 playoff games and Matt Cooke his first since the 2004 playoffs.

Fedotenko was a disappointment to the Penguins by scoring only 16 goals in 65 games this season, but he has four goals in his last seven playoff games.

``We got it (secondary scoring) in the first couple of games and we won,' Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said Sunday. ``They've gotten it the last couple of games and they've won. So, hopefully it's our turn.'

Still, the Capitals must be wondering if they've set themselves up for yet another failure by the franchise against the Penguins, who won six of the seven previous playoff matchups between the rivals - five times after trailing.

Even after they lost Games 3 and 4 in Pittsburgh, the Capitals could have won the series by maintaining home-ice advantage. They gave that away by losing Saturday, when Malkin's pass intended for Crosby banked in off Tom Poti's stick for the game-winning goal. This may be one time the Capitals regret that Poti employs one of the longest sticks ever used in the NHL.

However, Penguins coach Dan Bylsma realizes that desperation often is the biggest motivator of all, and that Washington is certain to have it.

``When you get down 2-0, that fear of not winning and not moving on is there,' Bylsma said Sunday. ``We got the desperation in our game we needed and we've put ourselves in a situation to move on. The guys in that (dressing) room know exactly what's at stake and what's in front of us for Game 6. We expect a team that's going to be real desperate ... a team that's good, that's dangerous, that's going to be giving everything they've got.'

Withstand that desperation, and the Penguins will play in the Eastern Conference finals for the second season in a row. They last did that while winning the Stanley Cup in 1991 and 1992.

There's also this stat for the Capitals to ponder. The Penguins have never lost when they had the chance to close out Washington in a series, going 6-0.

The Penguins want to avoid what happened last month, when they lost a potential series-ending Game 5 to the Flyers 3-0 at home. That forced them to go on the road and win 5-3 in Game 6, despite allowing Philadelphia to score the first three goals.

``I think we learned from that,' Staal said. ``We know how big a game this is and how important it is for us.'

Sergei Gonchar hasn't been ruled out for Monday's game, although it appeared the knee-to-knee hit that Ovechkin gave him in Game 4 might sideline the Penguins defenseman for the rest of the playoffs.

``I'm hoping he improves and we can see him on the ice, and we'll go from there,' Bylsma said.

Washington Capitals at Pittsburgh Penguins (-190, 5.5)

The Pens are big faves to close out the Caps at home in Game 6 of their series after winning in dramatic fashion Saturday night in Washington.

The contest included few power play opportunities for Pittsburgh, but tripping call against Washington?s Milan Jurcina was all the edge Evgeni Malkin needed to notch the overtime winner.

Malkin?s shot was tipped in by Washington defenseman Tom Poti leaving Caps netminder Simeon Varlamov with no shot of stopping the puck.

?It?s Malkin, so you can?t give him too much time and space,? Poti explained after the game. ?It became a 2-on-1 and I tried to go down to take the pass away and take away his angle coming to the net. He tried to make the pass and it ended up going off my glove and my stick or something. An unfortunate bounce.?

Scoring chances have come in bunches in this series with both teams? skill players getting quality shots on net. Pittsburgh?s power play will miss the services of blueliner Sergei Gonchar but that won?t prevent the final score from finishing above the total for the fourth time in the series.

Pick: Over

Vancouver Canucks at Chicago Blackhawks (-180, 5)

The Canucks lost just two games at home over the final three months of the regular season, but they?ve managed to drop two straight at GM Place and face elimination Monday night as a result.

David Bolland?s goal with 5:05 remaining in the third period gave the Hawks the lead and Martin Havlat recorded an empty net marker to seal the Canucks? fate.

?We?re going to regroup,? Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo said. ?We?re going to come Monday and we?re going to play the hardest game we?ve played all year, make sure we play our best game on the ice, and bring us back [home for Game 7].?

The Canucks will have to test Hawks goalie Nikolai Khabibulin more often to be successful Monday night. Vancouver has been outshot 58-36 in the last two games of this series and 114-78 since Game 2.

Expect the Hawks to finish off the Canucks and advance to the third round of the playoffs for the first time since the early 1990s.

Pick: Chicago
