The National Invitational Tournament has become a testing lab for potential new rules in college basketball.

The 32-team field will feature four new rules this year, with Louisville among the teams competing for a trip to the semifinals and final at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The new rules include:

a widened lane from 12 to 16 feet
an extended 3-point line to 22-plus feet
a shot clock that resets to 20 seconds after a team's offensive rebound
four 10-minute quarters instead of two 20-minute halves
In previous years, the NCAA tested the 30-second shot clock in the NIT before it became common in college hoops, along with the 4-foot charge arc under the basket.

► 5 reasons Louisville basketball fell short of an NCAA Tournament bid

?The style of play in men?s college basketball is healthy and appealing, but the leadership governing the game is interested in keeping the playing rules contemporary and trending favorably," Dan Gavitt, the NCAA's senior vice president of basketball, said in a February release. "Experimenting with two significant court dimension rules, a shot-clock reset rule and a game-format rule all have some level of support in the membership, so the NIT will provide the opportunity to gather invaluable data and measure the experience of the participants."

If the NCAA likes the results from the rules, they could be implemented into regular-season and NCAA Tournament games, but that wouldn't happen until May 2019, when new rules changes can be made again.

SO..........when it comes to OVER/UNDERS what do the Guru's think..:0corn

The 2018 NIT will feature four rules modifications:

? The three-point line will be extended by approximately 1 foot 8 inches to the same distance used by FIBA for international competition (22 feet 1.75 inches).

? The free throw lane will be widened from 12 feet to 16 feet, consistent with the width used by the NBA.

? The games will be divided into four 10-minute quarters as opposed to two 20-minute halves. Teams will shoot two free throws beginning with the fifth foul of each quarter.

? The shot clock will reset to 20 seconds after an offensive rebound instead of the full 30 seconds

I'm thinking it might keep the games a bit lower scoring, but not positive.

It's nothing like the first month of college football season in 2006 when under bettors cleaned up. That was the season where the NCAA decided to start the game clock after every change of possession and the start of quarters, before the first play was even run! It was a GREAT month, as I remember Vegas being slow to catch up on the new rule (or thinking that Joe Q. Public wouldn't know about it or not think it was a big deal)
I remember there being something like 12-15 (on average) less plays run in each game because of the running clock.
It was a terrible rule change and it didn't last long....maybe just that season? It made for less exciting finishes to games, because the trailing team had to burn timeouts after scoring....before the leading team even hiked the ball on its ensuing possession.
I don't have the O/U data, but I remember doing very well for a month or two before the linesmakers started to seriously adjust their totals.

Will be interesting to see how the rule changes play out in the NIT.
Thanks for posting!

There figures to be only slight increase in scoring so don't think there will be that great an effect on the total.
