Had a great time yest at Erwin Center.What a great basketball arena.Had nice seats pretty close to the floor.
Got there early and went courtside.Spoke to Hank Dickenson the asso AD at North Texas.Talked to the play by play announcers.Was introduced to Coach Johnny Jones.
Everything was great until the jump ball.Oh wait..one other thing. NT and Texas warmed up and with 10 minuts before the jump ball both teams went back into there lockerooms.Then the PA announcer had everybody stand for the national anthem and then the "eyes of Texas".
I have never seen that were the teams aren't on the floor.Is that normal ??? I know I go to Marist games and you can't compare that with Texas but do the Kansas's,OU's,etc do that.Really intrested if anyone knows that.
Anyway the game starts.NT is in trouble from the start.It's 10-0 in 2 minuts.You can see the Texas size,speed,etc is no match for NT.
Texas is in a man/man pressure defense over playing the passing lanes.NT has 1 guy dribbling all over and 4 guys watching.NOT one screen or pick.No offensive plays.NOT one back door the entire game.Forced shot after forced shots.Not one box out on the bds.
I saw NT shoot at least 15-20 times with not one person in the paint for an off. bd.
This is the worst coached team I think I've ever seen.NT with 4 minuts to go in the 1st half ran a double screen and used motion for the ist time.But Barnes put on a half court trap and got a 10-0 run.
NT ran about 6 or 7 out of bounds plays from under there basket. The same freak'in one.It worked the 1st time and never again.NT turned it over 3 times.
Barnes played with them subbing his players.Then when the Texas lead went to 14-16 pts he put in his press and it went right back to a 20-25 pt lead.
I know Nt is no match for the Buckmans and the Mickey dee's Gibson and Aldridge.PJ Tucker,etc.
But I have never seen a team with as low a basketball IQ.Getting beat,outrebounded,outshoot,etc are expected.But dribbling between your legs in traffic and taking fade away 3's,off balance.One guy Thomas came in off the bench.As soon as he touched it he shot and air ball. Next series down had a shot blocked. Opps.did I say block shot.Buckaman was 1 BS from breaking the Texas all time record.He had 8. Mims and owens hold the record at 9.But 4 of those 8 were blocked shots from the 3 pt area.How many slow white guys 6'8 240 go out and block 3 pt shooters.Unreal.The 4 others were inside.Never once did an NT player PUMP,Fake,etc.They just went straight up and "boom".Row 7. In fact one block shot almost hit the "Rudy's barbq" blimp floating around the arena dropping free dinner leaflets.[lol]
Nt is loaded with athletic bodies.All 6'6 can jump,run,etc.
But they probaly set 5 picks in the entire game.I don't like Barnes but on one off. set there were 5 screens.
NT shot 31%,[22-71] and no it wasn't the Texas defense.Of course that did have something to do with it.They were 5-28 from the 3.At least half of those were just "chucks".
I know I'm sounding off. I didn't lose very much money because it was a "heart" play so I'm not upset at that.
I'm upset because there where so lacking in basic fundamentals. Finger rolling layups,not uses the glass,off balance shots,dribbling behind your back.Passing was horrendous.They has 23 turnovers and if Barnes pressed more it could of been double.
And how can a D-1 team not run a backdoor play when a defender is overplaying you and you isolated.In some of those missing 3's there were about 10 when the nearest off. player was up at the elbow.
NT has many greyhounds.But in order for a dog to learn he has to be taught.I know they get a lot of juco kids and they have to learn to play together but last nite I saw 10 selfish players doing what ever they wanted.
I'm writting Johnny Jones when I get back to NY. He's responsible.I'll send him some freak'in drills on shooting,rebounding and what a BACK DOOR is.
NT will win games in the Sun Belt with all the talent they have.But last nite Texas could of beaten them by 50.And Barnes is an assh..With 5 minuts to go he's up by 24[right near the +22.5] he puts in his 1st team,presses,Alridge jams ones,Gibson hits a 3,etc and they go on a 10 pt spurt.He subbs them all with 1.50 left.
I can't wait when Eddie Sutton does that to your ass.
