Memphis Linebacker Ineligible
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP)--Linebacker Albert Means, the focus of an NCAA investigation into improper recruiting, is academically ineligible to play for Memphis this year.
``I am disappointed that the team will be without Albert,'' Memphis coach Tommy West said Thursday. ``I have strongly encouraged him to continue to work toward regaining his eligibility for the 2003 season.''
Means is attending summer school.
Means, a Parade All-American when he played at Trezevant High in Memphis, went to Alabama in 1999. He left that school after one season, however, amid allegations his former high school coaches sought payoffs from university recruiters.
Means was not accused of wrongdoing.
The NCAA allowed him to transfer to Memphis without sitting out a season.
Duke QB Wispelwey charged with DWI
Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - Duke quarterback Chris Wispelwey, a candidate for the starting job this season, was charged with driving while impaired early Sunday morning.
According to a police report, Wispelwey was caught driving west in the eastbound lanes of a street, forcing oncoming traffic to drive up on the sidewalk to avoid a head-on collision.
Wispelwey registered a blood- alcohol level of 0.17 and is scheduled to appear in Orange County District Court on August 20.
The redshirt sophomore was fourth on Duke's depth chart after spring practice, but has worked his way up because D. Bryant has been declared academically ineligible. Wispelwey, Adam Smith or Chris Dapolito could be the starter this season
Virginia
Projected starting fullback Jonathan Ward has decided to end his playing career due to medical reasons. Ward, a junior, was held out of most of the spring practices because of a string of concussions.
Although unable to play, Ward will remain on scholarship and won?t be counted against the Cavs? limit of 85 scholarship players.
