AQUEDUCT-only ran four days for the second consecutive week, thanks to Easter Sunday. The track was fast for the first two days while Friday it was sealed and Saturday it was labeled muddy or good although it was harrowed.

Early speed was good though not dominant, with the right pace scenario, horses were able to rally and win. The inside was the place to be throughout the week.

In what is beginning to be an annual rite of spring in New York, the fields were short and for the most part, so were the mutuels. Trying to beat the favorite can be hazardous to your health (not to mention your bankroll) when the leaves start turning green.

For those who find no fun betting short priced horses to win, which I suspect are the vast majority of everyday players, keying one or two of them in multiple race wagers such as the Pick 3 or Pick 4 seems a logical alternative at the Aqueduct spring meet. It?s either that or passing a lot of races or looking out of town for some betting value.

As it stands right now, the out of town products are a maze of low level racing that are short on form and long on guesswork, unless you?ve been concentrating on them for a while.

The first half of every Gulfstream card, even on weekends, look a like lot Calder?s; no form and slow horses. Oaklawn Park offers large fields in most races but at least to this player, seem too hard (that?s right, too hard) too handicap successfully.

OPINION VS. ACTION-we?re always hearing about races that are wide open and offer great value, but sometimes they?re a little too wide open for me. Let me explain.

If you handicap a race and come up with three or four horses that seem to have a legitimate chance to win and are all in the same ballpark odds wise, how do you bet the race? Boxing them in the exacta spreads your money way too thin as far as I?m concerned. But keying one although you don?t like him or her any better than the others seem to be just an excuse to have some action and not the way to manage your money successfully.

As is the case when there?s an overwhelming favorite that you don?t think you can beat, but because of miniscule odds, can?t bet either; sometimes it?s better to check your ego and admit that a certain event has you buffaloed and let it pass.

I no it?s hard to just sit on your hands and I?m as guilty as most of you when it comes to betting just for the action but it?s a never-ending battle we?re in with our daily assault at the windows and sometimes you have to lose a battle (translation: passing a race) to win the war.
