New York Times Admonishes Reporter For Hoping America Wins in Iraq...
on january 8, the new york times's chief military correspondent, michael gordon, said on the charlie rose show, after being asked if he thinks america can accomplish its goals in iraq:
""As a purely personal view, I think it's worth it -- one last effort for sure to try to get this right, because my personal view is we've never really tried to win. We've simply been managing our way to defeat. And I think that if it's done right, I think that there is the chance to accomplish something"".
Unacceptable, according to public editor, Byron Calame, who writes:
""Times editors have carefully made clear their disapproval of the expression of a personal opinion about Iraq on national television by the paper`s chief military correspondent, Michael Gordon ...
I raised reader concerns about Mr. Gordon`s voicing of personal opinions with top editors, and received a response from Philip Taubman, the Washington bureau chief ...
I would agree with you that he stepped over the line on the Charlie Rose show. I have discussed the appearances with Michael and I am satisfied that the comments on the Rose show were an aberration. They were a poorly worded shorthand for some analytical points about the military and political situation in Baghdad that Michael has made in the newspaper in a more nuanced and unopinionated way. He agrees his comments on the show went too far""....
expressing a personal opinion on an interview show?. .a mild opinion basically saying,"let`s give it one last shot"...how outrageous.....next time gordon keep on message...lol.....
i`lll say one thing about the nyt`s, they are consistent in their confirmed hatred of america....according to them, mr. gordon is clearly aiding and abetting the enemy....
let me ask this...on the concern regarding gordon`s voicing of personal opinions...
think about it...a little experiment: suppose gordon had answered charlie rose's question by saying, "oh, this so-called 'victory' that bush talks about is absolute nonsense.....iraq is a complete, utter, failure....indeed, the word 'quagmire' doesn't begin to describe it."
now that`s a little strong, but, does anyone believe he'd be facing a public rebuke by the nyt`s for "voicing a personal opinion"?
if america ever really fails, i hope a special place in the hell that takes the place of america is reserved for the owners and publishers of the nyt`s.......
