Man, if I knew I'd be rich.:D Really have no idea, but I think the Angels will be able to take 1 game at least, preferably tomorrow, to put more pressure on NYY.

MLBeat: Twins don't fear Zito

MINNEAPOLIS -- It was pretty obvious that the Twins were overmatched, as most teams are, by Oakland's Mark Mulder in Wednesday's 9-1, Game 2 loss. They managed just one run and five hits over six innings against the Oakland southpaw, and many don't think they'll fare much better against lefty 23-game-winner Barry Zito in Game 3 at the Metrodome.

But the Twins aren't buying into that theory.

"I think he has a pretty good curveball," Torii Hunter said. "A lot of guys go up there looking for that, and he ends up throwing an 88-mph fastball by you. Zito can pitch, but I don't think he's better than Mulder.

"Mulder is a pretty nasty lefty. I think we have a better chance [against Zito]. I'm not trying to take the credit away from Zito -- he's a great pitcher, trust me; that's why he has 23 wins -- but I think it will be a better matchup for us against Zito."

Stat geeks would beg to differ. Mulder posted a 19-7 record and a 3.47 ERA, which is an incredible season by any standard -- except Zito's. His 23-5 mark was the best in the American League, and his 2.75 ERA was good enough for third in the AL behind Boston's Pedro Martinez (2.26) and Derek Lowe (2.58).

So, how can the Twins like their chances better against Zito?

According to Doug Mientkiewicz, Mulder does a better job of keeping hitters off balance, because of his velocity and variety of pitches.

"Mulder, I would say, is more of a power guy, which you don't see very often from a left-handed pitcher," he said. "Mulder's got the ability to throw three different types of fastballs, two or three different types of split-fingers, two changeups, a slider and a curveball. So you've really got nothing to go by.

"Zito -- I won't say he's predictable, by any means, but he's more of a fastball/curveball guy with an occasional changeup."

Even though the Twins prefer facing Zito's style over Mulder's, they know it's not going to be a cakewalk -- that their best bet might be some bad airplane food.

"Hopefully, they'll get the flu or food poisoning tonight, and they'll all be off tomorrow," Mientkiewicz joked.

MLBeat: A's downplay dome

"We know this is a tough place to play," said shortstop Miguel Tejada, "but we've been here lots of times and we've won here, so we'll be OK."

What the A's have not had to deal with is a playoff game here. Nor have these Twins. Minnesota is in the postseason for the first time in 11 years, and everyone involved expects the noise levels to be off the charts.

"The crowd noise will definitely have some effect," Howe said, "and we have to be aware that communication is going to be a problem there."

"There is no simulating how loud that place is," said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire. "I mean, [A's outfielder] David Justice knows; he was there. It's unbelievable."

Said Justice, who played here in the 1991 World Series as a member of the Atlanta Braves: "I just remember it being packed ... and being very loud. It was definitely a playoff atmosphere."

When the A's played here during the regular season, a massive curtain was hiding an expanse of empty seats. Those seats will be filled this weekend, and the vibe will be a first for the Twins, too.

"When they move those curtain up and you fill that up and get the atmosphere of a playoff and it's buzzing, when people start roaring in there, it is unbelievably loud," said Gardenhire, who was Minnesota's third-base coach in 1991. "You really can't hear much out there at all, and it's something that we are going to have to deal with, our young baseball team. But there is some kind of excitement in there, and it is very, very loud."

But Justice also has played in World Series games at Yankee Stadium. "If you could put a lid on Yankee Stadium, I think it'd be even louder than here," he said.

As for the other so-called advantages the Twins have here, mainly their familiarity with the artificial turf and the Teflon roof, the A's were in downplay mode.

"I've been coming to play here for six years," said right fielder Jermaine Dye. "I don't think it'll be that big of a deal."

Dye didn't seem a bit bothered by the artificial turf, saying all of the A's outfielders have dealt with it enough to have a good feel. In fact, he said, the ball probably will skid less here than it did in Oakland, where the field was all but bare in some spots as the result of the previous Sunday's Raiders game.

Center fielder Terrence Long laughed when it was brought up.

"You saw the field at home," Long said. "Ain't no way this is any worse."

Dye said the roof can be a problem at times, but he couldn't recall any personal nightmares.

"Sometimes you can lose fly balls because the roof is dirty and the ball is dirty," Dye explained. "But I've never really had any major problems. Either you pick the ball up or you don't, and I've been able to -- so far."
