Seattle -- For the first time this year, Jason Giambi was not in the starting lineup,
as the A's star was held out as a precaution with a tight right calf muscle. Giambi came out of Sunday's game in the ninth inning with a cramp in his calf, and it became sore late in Tuesday's game at Seattle. Trainer Larry Davis said that isn't unusual and there is usually soreness for 48 to 72 hours following a cramp.
"I played through it, but it kept cramping up on me," Giambi said, explaining that the tightness especially bothers him because he hits off his front leg. "It just wasn't getting any better. I love going out there and playing, but I don't want it to turn from a one-day thing into a 15-day thing."
Giambi is expected to DH today. Regular DH John Jaha extended his hitless streak to 23 at-bats by going 0-for-4, striking out and grounding into a double play. Jaha is batting .089 (4-for-45).
MISCELLANY: Manager Art Howe has had disagreements two nights running with umpire Jim Joyce, who missed a call at second on Tuesday night, then blew another at first last night when Johnny Damon was clearly safe on a grounder to first, but was called out. Howe asked Joyce to review replays of both. . . .
Howe said that Triple-A Sacramento starter Erik Hiljus is a possibility to start Saturday's game at Texas. . . . Reliever T.J. Mathews, designated for assignment last week, has cleared waivers and is free to sign with another major-league club. . . . Bobby Crosby, the A's top draft choice, is working out every day in Southern California, but the Long Beach State shortstop is eager to sign a deal and go to Class-A Vancouver. "I can't wait to get out there," Crosby said. "I'm taking grounders, I'm hitting, I'm lifting weights, but that's getting kind of old."
