Players try to stay loose with creative costumes at Halloween party

The Leafs haven't been themselves lately, and nowhere was that more evident than at the team's party this past Monday.

With the team equalling the worst start in franchise history last weekend, Monday's party had a Halloween theme.

Players, wives and girlfriends gathered at a downtown restaurant-bar, with costumes welcomed. And the players didn't disappoint, transforming into a wide spectrum of alter egos and pop culture icons.

"Me and Rickard Wallin, we went as the Super Mario brothers," said rookie Viktor Stalberg. "I'm not used to dressing up for Halloween, but when we got there, it was a great night."

The party was mostly hush-hush, a players only affair. This party was a much-needed break from so much doom and gloom surrounding the daily process of trying to gel as a team, and get that elusive first win.

So the players went all out.

The best costume?

"What did the guys say ... Jamal Mayers? Yeah, I'll go with that," said Luke Schenn, referring to Mayers, who came as Michael Jackson.

Mayers in fact, had his costume professionally prepared, right down to spray-painting his face to more resemble the late King of Pop.

Mayers floored everyone at the party with his impersonation of Jackson.

"Have you seen Jamal dance? ... I thought he was Michael Jackson," Schenn said.

There wasn't a vote on costumes, but if there was, Mike Komisarek would have come a close second.

"He (Komisarek) came as Venus Williams, it was awesome," winger John Mitchell said. Mitchell added that he and his wife came as Wayne and Garth of the movie Wayne's World, with his wife dressing up as Wayne "because she has dark hair."

Schenn went as Lindsay Lohan, but the impression was a little off. "I looked like a big girl," Schenn laughed.

Laughter, it seemed, was as important as anything else. The club had an eventful week, with seven days off between games.

Practices ranged from the fun ? dodgeball at Monday's practice ? to the intense ? skating to exhaustion and contact the past two days.

It was important, with so much focus on breaking out of the rut, to relieve the pressure.

"We've been messing around on the plane (during road trips), and it's all been good, but we want to come home (from the upcoming five game road trip), with a couple of wins, that's all we're thinking about," Komisarek said.
