On the course!
Well, I shitcanned my old printer a while back, and picked up a new one today. The old one was running too slow, and when I updated my computer to 2000 Professional, the software didn't recognize the printer.

Well, I picked up an HP 5550, put in the CD, and went through the setup.......once again, when the program ran so far, it said, "Printer not recognized: Check setup."

Well, fuk me!

Does this have something to do with the fact that I am using 2000 Pro? (I want to think not, as the box says it is campatible.)

Perhaps the printer refuses to work for me because of my anger, gambling, and drinking problems?????????

slove, you are a computer geek......share some of your accumen, and have me groveling at your feet.

Yeah for whatever reason I had a couple of clients that had trouble with new printers and 2000Pro.

The way I would always try it is through the printer control panel, adding a printer, then using the CD software from there. I am very skeptical of the prepackaged crap that printer companies bundle these days.

There is a chance you have a bad serial cord, but I doubt that is the case.

Also make sure you uninstall all your old printer software before trying any of this.

As a last resort try using google, the HP website or MS Knowledge Base to see if there are any known conflicts with your printer and 2000Pro. It happens sometimes.

Dr..........

Not that I swing with the Irish Social Club, but I would not want a filthy jarhead with an ass that leaves serious skids in his BVD's to do the "Back door Badger" on me!

Ace,

I will give that a shot.

slove,

I was at that house of mirrors all afternoon, and got nowhere. Thanks for the effort, though.

Definitely a good move IMO. I never had any luck with 2000 and spent very little time with it. 98 is great, otherwise make the move to XP Pro.

If I'm not mistaken, I think the HP 5550 can use either Parrallel or USB. Try the one you haven't been using. If it installs fine, it was a bad cable or port. Also, make sure you install the SW first and only plug the printer in when the istaller tells you to. This is especially important when using the USB interface. Good luck

yyz, you are correct. if you are angry, the printer will most likely refuse to print for you. it's a common thing.

Stuman is right, is it a parallel or USB cable you're using?

I am using a USB:

Here is what HP support says:

Even if the computer has a USB port, it will not function unless it is
set up, or enabled. Follow the steps listed below to determine whether
the port is enabled.

1. Click Start, Settings, then Control Panel.
2. Double-click the 'System' icon. The System Properties window will
open.
3. Click the Hardware tab.
4. Click the Device Manager tab.
5. Click the plus (+) icon to the left of the 'Universal Serial Bus
Controller'.
6. Verify that 'USB Host Controller' and 'USB Root Hub' are listed
under 'Universal Serial Bus Controller'. This will indicate that
the computer's USB port has been enabled.

Here's what it says when I click the + sign:

"Unsupported VIA USB Universal Host Controler"

If you do not see these devices listed, refer to your computers
documentation or contact the manufacturer for more information on
enabling and setting up USB.

This sounds like a big cluster F to me under 2000, probably why I hated it so much. Go back to 98 or go to XP if that is an option. Nothing beats plug and play.
