And I would argue that most countries in the west follow suit....

I hate to fuck with your head, but.....this has never been a democracy.

Look back to 1788. Half the population was prohibited from voting just because they were not male. Blacks didn't vote. Native Americans didn't vote. Poor folks didn't vote. Elections were decided by the class of literate, wealthy, land-owning white folks, a tiny percentage of the population. It was a true oligarchy. George Washington won in a landslide with just 1.3% of the population (38,000) voting.

Today about 50% vote in presidential elections.


Today things are becoming more democratic. Most folks are allowed to vote, although the right-wingers are trying to put a stop to that.

The rich and famous still control many things, but not nearly as much as in the past. Ferchrissake, we elected a BLACK man. Twice. Democracy is alive and doing better than ever before.
