Well guys, my opinion here certainly isn't objectIve. It's refreshing to see Republican Heavy hitters like First & McCann break ranks and not just vote with the Party. What pisses me off is one silver spoon fed child of privilege, with probably no day of adversity in his life putting the hammer on this science. My bet is he doesn't even know the science, or worst never even took the time, and is just catering to his friends on the religious right, much like the flag & gay issues being debated last month.

I'd also wager Bush couldn't even spell blastocyst, never mind recite what one was. Sadder yet if one of his wild twins during one of their drunken adventures were say knocked up by Joe the neighborhood grease monkey, or Leroy the star high school running back, you can bet George would have his little darling down the abortion clinic faster than he could shout NUCLEAR.

you watch though, his tune will change. Just like Nancy' s did. When Barbara & 41 are roaming around the house mumbling in their shit stained pajamas, just like Reagan, his attitude will quickly change. When adversity hits the child of privilege, and votes don't matter, lets see where his opinion falls.

you may not agree with his veto, but he sure hasn't wavered in his stance on this issue.

Glad it's not up to me to decide, I know that. Tough issue for me too.

here is the deal:

why is there a big push to publicly fund stem cell research when molecular based immunotherapy shows so much more promise?????

clearly, some people have a moral issue with this, yet it is being forced upon them to have this publicly funded while other hotter topics in science/medicine show more realistic promise

its BS...if you want to fund this, do it with more and more private money or leave it alone and let it fight for the dollar on merit as all other projects do

having an idiotic politician tell us that someone will stand up and walk if you vote for this is pathetic and unfortunately, many fall for this schpeel

lets investigate cancer at the molecular level and continue to develop molecular targets, understand the neuron much much better, etc. etc. before we just start randomly inserting stem cells in places before we know what we are doing

read about herceptin, rituxan and gleevac

development of drugs such as these along with the potential of DNA vaccines are where money should be spent

no one is coming out and saying "Geez, these politicians who voted for this bill must hate women, as new molecular based therapies for breast cancer adjuvant to herceptin were not involved in this bill" unlike the rhetoric coming out in favor of this bill

such argument would be lunacy, as is any rhetoric which is currently coming out of various fool's mouth in our congress today regarding this issue

man freeze, good post. I have heard both sides of the issue on this but i think youve done a great job presenting a very quick, well thought out argument for one side of the issue

another point is: show me some results of stem cell used in modern therapy other than primitive marrow multipotential cells used in transplants which are a completely different cell than the one in question

given, that research has been ongoing for years, and we don't have any therapy yet, it seems like we may not be ready to dive right in like the politicos would want you to think

it is rather a great sounding story which can divide people ethically....so you have an ethically divisive research area which has yielded no practical results and people are clamoring for it???

amazing

If the research was that promising, would it need federal dollars to make it happen?
