(Sports Network) - The Ottawa Senators, off to a very sluggish start, continue their current homestand tonight when they welcome the Buffalo Sabres to Corel Centre.
Ottawa, which will play the third portion of a four-game set, had a two-match winning streak halted via Saturday's 3-2 loss to Montreal. Jason Spezza and Wade Redden scored power-play goals for the Senators, who have tallied their last seven markers with the man advantage. Patrick Lalime stopped just 10 of Montreal's 13 shots between the pipes.
The Sens' stellar power-play showing of late has propelled them to third place in the NHL rankings. They have converted on 19 of their 72 chances this season, which is good for a 26.4 percent rate. Ottawa is 5-3-1-1 when scoring a power-play goal and 2-2-1-0 when they don't convert.
Ottawa, which won the Presidents' Trophy and was a game away from the Stanley Cup Finals a season ago, currently sits tied for third in the Northeast Division with 17 points -- eight behind first-place Boston.
The Senators, 3-3-2-1 at home, will close out their set Thursday against Carolina.
Buffalo, meanwhile, is 0-1-1-1 in the last three and 1-2-2-1 in the last six. On Friday, the Sabres dropped a 2-1 home decision to the woeful Pittsburgh Penguins in overtime. Aleksey Morozov's tally 3:09 into the extra session provided the difference, as the Pens capped off a comeback win.
Daniel Briere scored in defeat for Buffalo and Mika Noronen made 21 saves. Briere tallied his fourth goal of the season and is second on the team with 11 points overall.
The Sabres are one of the teams tied for third in the Northeast standings, with Montreal being the third. A 4-4-1 road club, they'll visit New Jersey on Wednesday.
