Just curious if anyone knows how this opening of the cell phone companies allowing a purchase of a phone from any company and use with your cell service? I am with Verizon and look forward to puchasing a phone from a competitor for use with Verizon. Thanks

I have Verizon and be very careful. A lot of phones are not compatible with the Verizon network. I won a great phone on a radio contest....and couldn't use it. I wasn't happy about it...but there's nothing they could do. THe technologies just weren't compatible

Verizon does that intentionally -- and the Verizon approved phones often have attributes locked up that you can not use. Even if you get something "unlocked" and able to work on their network, you can kiss the warranty goodbye if you ever have a problem.

I think Sprint is similar as I know their signals are much like Verizon.

Thanks, I had read that although the cell companies were "opening" their systems they in reality had ways of making the process an opening in name only
