Vanished into vortex
I'm sure I'll be sorry for this and really hope it doesn't turn into a pro-union vs non-union bash fest, but I gotta ask.

The NHLPA is back slapping and high fiving over their "victory" in the recent lockout settlement.

Here is what I need help understanding; the players got what is widely being reported as $300 million in concessions from the NHL's Oct 2nd offer that union head Don Fehr refused to negotiate off of.

$300 over 10 years is a good bit of money, no doubt. They sacrificed $750 Million in paychecks to get it. That does not count what they will have to pay Don Fehr, which will be a hefty sum no doubt.

How does anyone consider this a win for the union? I understand that the belief is the next deal will be negotiated off of this one as a starting point so it's hard to really put a number on what that $300 million is ultimately worth. The vast majority of these players will not be in the league 10 years from now so, hmmm.

I'm not looking for a fight, I honestly just don't get it.

Hey Bro,
No fight here. I haven't read all the tenets of the deal yet. My first consideration would be that the concessions they gave were probably considered lateral revenue moves. Meaning they may have recovered some concessions in areas that don't necessarily have an affect on their pay and pensions. For instance, they can cut the retention program for injured players or shorten it. Allow more freedom of movement of players to the minors is reflected as a concession. For instance, they may be able to send a veteran down to the minors and that has a value to the nhl so the union hangs a price tag on it saying that it is worth say ten million a year so that is a hundred million right there. Most voting players will forego the security of that to retain or raise the salary cap and player compensation.

I still plan on reading it and will have a better answer then.

Hope this helps,
FDC

I have to tell you I looked at it just briefly and I 100% agree with penguinfan here the players got a raw deal. As I said, I don't know all the details - just what I read and the owners fucking bitch slapped them around to say the least. That's the short version from me.

Where it is real F ing COLD
I thought the players were more or less locked out. It was the owners who dictated this contract not the union or am I wrong? But the fact of the matter without a union the NHL players would of been hosed years ago
