Patriots sign Colvin, add youth to defense
11 Mar 03 / by Andy Hart, Patriots Football Weekly

With one signing the New England defense became much younger and more athletic Tuesday afternoon, as the Patriots reached an agreement with free agent linebacker Rosevelt Colvin. The former Bear visited Gillette Stadium on Sunday and the two sides have been working since that time hammering out a deal. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The 6-3, 245-pounder started 15-of-16 games played for the Bears last season and finished the year with 72 tackles and 10.5 sacks. He also had 3 forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and 5 passes defensed.

Just after the signing was announced, Colvin seemed to be both excited that the free agent journey was over and relieved that he had settled on a new home.

?This process has been very extensive and tiresome,? Colvin said on a conference call via cell phone from T.F. Green Airport in Rhode Island. ?My thoughts in the last couple of days have circled so many different ways. I just made up my gut instinct and just felt like the Patriots was the best place for me.

?I just felt like it was the best fit for me. Obviously they have been winning for a while. Coach Belichick and his staff have developed a scheme that they feel is good, a system. I was impressed by everything, not only just the stadium, but the staff, the front office and everyone came across real well.?

In just four seasons in the NFL the former fourth-round selection out of Purdue has developed quite a positive reputation as a pass rusher, especially over the last two seasons. In November, Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick showered Colvin with a great deal of praise during the week leading up to the Patriots game in Chicago.

Colvin would appear to be a good fit for a New England defense that not only needed an injection of youth but also requires a certain degree of versatility to play. The young, athletic, pass-rushing linebacker could play in either the 3-4 or 4-3, adding versatility to a group that already includes the unique talents of Tedy Bruschi, Willie McGinest and Mike Vrabel.

?I have been in Chicago for four years playing in a defense that is pretty good and I just feel like I can bring something to the table that some linebackers don't have,? Colvin said. ?[The Patriots] have plenty of talent on defense, don't get me wrong. I am not the answer to any questions that they have. I am just a piece of the puzzle. Obviously they have been to the Super Bowl and they have won it. They have a thirst for getting back there and I have the thirst of getting there for the first time. I am just looking to come in, contribute and do my part just like every other player on the team.?

With a total of 21 sacks over the last two seasons, the 25-year-old Colvin had received significant interest on the free agent market and reportedly made visits to Detroit, Arizona, Houston and the Giants prior to his stop in New England.

The linebacker was also quick to clear up the circumstances surrounding left-shoulder surgery that he had in early January. There was some speculation that the surgery would hurt Colvin's status in the free agent market, but based on the number of teams that expressed interest it was a minor detail.

?The shoulder is doing real good,? Colvin said. ?Everything should be fine and it should make me a better player by getting it stabilized. It was stabilization. I have been playing with [the problem] for four years. It happened in college. It wasn't anything major. It was just something that we felt like it was time to go ahead and take care of going through the process that we were getting ready to go through.?

Healthy and ready to go, Colvin is easily the biggest new free agent signing the Patriots have made under the current coaching and scouting staff. It will be months before Colvin gets to show his stuff on the football field and validate his signing, but in the end the player says he is just ready to go in a place where he felt most comfortable.

?I just felt like I made the best decision for myself by coming here to New England,? Colvin said. ?The attitude was definitely right and the direction they are going in is positive. The front office is invested in winning and honestly I want to be a part of this.?

Colvin's career totals include 56 games played, 36 starts, 210 tackles, 26 sacks, 7 forced fumbles and 8 passes defensed.

Harrison a Patriot
12 Mar 03 / by Bryan Morry, Patriots Football Weekly

The New England Patriots are confirming that two-time Pro Bowl free agent safety Rodney Harrison, 31, has signed with the club a day after it inked prize linebacker Rosevelt Colvin. The deal was actually consummated late last night.

The Denver Post's Adam Schefter has the story in this morning's paper and quoted Harrison from The San Diego Union-Tribune. "I just wanted a fresh start," Harrison said. "I like Bill Belichick, the way his defensive mind works. I'm excited about being able to play in a great secondary with [Lawyer] Milloy and [Ty] Law."

After landing cornerback Tyrone Poole last week to either compete for a starting job or, at the very least, to improve the Patriots nickel back position, the team went ahead on defense this week as well, landing Colvin and now Harrison, who played his entire career in San Diego.

The nine-year veteran has 759 career tackles to go with 26 interceptions, 21.5 sacks, 83 passes defensed, eight forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. Last season, he finished second on the Chargers with 88 tackles along with two interceptions, two forced fumbles and seven passes defensed.

In addition to his two Pro Bowl selections (1998 and 2001), Harrison was named the Chargers Defensive Player of the Year four times. His best season statistically came in 2000 when he had 127 tackles, six interceptions, six sacks, 17 passes defensed and one forced fumble.

Harrison was plagued by a groin injury last season and missed two games, but told the Union-Tribune's Jim Trotter that he is fully recovered. He also told that paper that he is taking Yoga classes and has lost 12 pounds to increase his quickness and flexibility.

Harrison was originally a fifth-round pick out of Western Illinois. He was released by San Diego to free up cap space before the start of free agency this year.

The Harrison signing gives the Patriots some flexibility with free agent safety Tebucky Jones, who currently wears the team's ?franchise? tag. The Patriots could remove the tag and allow Jones to become a free agent, which would free up the $3.043 million in cap dollars committed to Jones as the ?franchise? player. The Harrison signing also gives the Patriots some wiggle room in trading Jones. To do that, the club would allow Jones' agent, Gary Wichard, to negotiate a long-term contract with a club that has agreed to trade terms with the Patriots.

The Patriots also still hold the rights to Victor Green in a sense. Green has an individually negotiated right of first refusal in his contract, meaning the Patriots have the right to match any offer he receives, although they would not receive compensation if they chose not to match.

Patriots sign safety Chris Akins
12 Mar 03 / by Andy Hart, Patriots Football Weekly

The Patriots added another safety to the mix Wednesday with the signing of Browns free agent safety Chris Akins. The 5-11, 195-pound safety played in 15 games in Cleveland last season, primarily in special teams action and finished second on the team with 25 special teams tackles. The team confirmed the signing late Wednesday, although terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The 26-year-old, four-year NFL veteran was originally drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the seventh round of the 1999 NFL draft. Akins spent parts of each of his first three season in the league with the Packers, and also had a stop in Dallas, before spending all of 2002 in Cleveland. In 49 career games he's totaled 17 tackles and one pass defensed in regular defensive action. Akins has shown a proficiency on special teams though, where he has 57 career stops, including 15 in his rookie year and 25 last season.

Akins could fill a similar role with the Patriots as many of its special teams players have over the last few seasons, including the likes of Je'Rod Cherry and currently un-signed free agent Chris Hayes. Akins could also provide special teams support should recent speculation on the trade or de-franchising of safety/special teams player Tebucky Jones come to fruition.

Patriots jump into free agent Poole
5 Mar 03 / by Andy Hart, Patriots Football Weekly

Published reports indicate that the Patriots hooked their first free agent of the offseason on Tuesday by agreeing to terms with veteran cornerback Tyrone Poole. The 5-8, 188-pound Poole comes to New England with 8 years of NFL experience after spending 2002 with the Denver Broncos. The team was not yet confirming the signing early Wednesday morning.

Poole visited the Patriots on Monday and was expected to weigh the team's offer along with others he had received from the Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs. In the end his agent said the player would end up where he was most comfortable with all factors and that appears to be New England.

The former first-round pick out of Fort Valley State, number 22 overall by the Panthers in 1995, played in 16 games with the Broncos last season, including four starts. He finished the season with 55 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. He spent his first three years in the NFL with the Panthers before being traded to the Colts in 1998 and subsequently playing three seasons in Indianapolis.

Poole signed with the Broncos as a free agent before the 2001 season, but retired in camp and was placed on the reserved/left squad list and was out of football for the entire season.

The veteran has started 89-of-108 career games played. His career totals included 413 tackles, five sacks, 10 interceptions, six forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Technically, think Belichek is an excellent coach, but the team will go as far as their QB will take them.Think they have a shot in their division since the Jets lost a few good players & am not a fan of the Miami QB.

Pats run defense killed them last year. These are some good signings. Their DB's are aging, but they could have bulked up more against the run. They had some key LB injuries last year though. They know what they're doing up there.

Brady was comparable last year to what he was superbowl year.

Meanwhile, Ravens won't pull the trigger on anyone. They're being very frugal.

I love the Jake Plummer deal. I really like him and hope that he shines now that he's not playnig for a perennial loser.

SD is getting geared up and I expect a lot from them this year. Win that division? YES! Look for some value on this come football season.

What am I doing? Summer solstice is a week away and I'm talking football??? Too much war talk.

According to the Cards front office, although Boston is big & fast he sometimes dogs it & or gets minor injuries.

I hate the Az. cards ownership. The front office is complaining that none of the named players wants to sign with them.

I agree Shrimp I like Plummer also & feel that he will thrive with Shannahan.Understand, somewhat why the cards did not sign Plummer, but are they kidding at the QB's they were thinking of replacing him with, Kordell Stewart or Jeff Blake, & finally settling on Blake. No wonder nobody goes to their games. This guy bidwell still doesn't get it after all of these years. What a sad franchise.

My team the Giants are trying to build up their defensive line & re-place some of the people they lost to free agency on the offensive line. They must get rid of the fat running back, dayne & get an everyplay back. Feel Tiki is too lite to be that type of back.Gald they got rid of Sehorn, think he was very over-rated.

I would bet they will dump Dayne. Barber can be an everydown back. Everyone assumed he couldn't but he has produced, and he's gotten bigger. His thighs are probably bigger than many linebackers' thighs.

Akins was a wasted signing by New England. The guy is a trouble maker who has been assessed numerous personal fouls. Sherman finally said enough was enough and got rid of him in 2001 even though the GB secondary was riddled with injuries.
