Patriots Offer 32nd Pick For Brandin Cooks

March 4th, 2017 at 6:43pm CST by Sam Robinson

Brandin Cooks has drawn a host of offers, but the Saints are aiming high if they?re to part with the 23-year-old wide receiver. Most notably, the Patriots have entered the equation. The defending Super Bowl champions offered their first-round pick (No. 32 overall) as part of a package for Cooks, NOLA.com?s Josh Katzenstein reports. But the reporter adds the Saints are targeting a mid-first-round selection for Cooks if they are to deal him.

Several other teams have made overtures to the Saints for Cooks, offering second-round picks for the fourth-year receiver, but the team is holding out. The Titans and Eagles are among the interested teams. Katzenstein notes at least five teams have contacted the Saints about Cooks. One of the unnamed franchises is hoping to give the Saints some defensive help to acquire the elusive wideout.

New Orleans is not operating as if it has to deal the wideout, though. He?s signed through 2017 and will be available on his rookie contract through ?18, provided the Saints or the team to which he?s traded predictably picks up his fifth-year option. Katzenstein notes Cooks? agents could come into play in this deal. Ryan and Bruce Tollner represent the wideout. They are also the agents for Carson Wentz and Marcus Mariota, helping to explain the two initial suitors becoming known this week.

Bill Belichick offered praise for the then-second-year wideout in 2015, expressing relief his team doesn?t have to face Cooks annually.

The Eagles have had their eye on Cooks dating back to the 2014 draft, and Philly attempted to trade for him before the 2016 trade deadline. The Eagles hold the No. 14 pick in the first round after winning a Friday coin flip vs. the Colts, while the second of the Titans? two first-rounders is the No. 18 pick. Those would fall within the realm of a mid-first-round selection. The Titans and Saints have already exchanged proposals regarding a potential deal, one that would have to be ?real significant? if New Orleans is to part with its current top receiver.

The Saints now have both Willie Snead and Michael Thomas as emerging playmakers, with Thomas breaking out down the stretch of his rookie slate. But Cooks has compiled two 1,100-yard seasons and has scored 17 touchdowns in those campaigns. And he?s under contract in 2017 for just $1.56MM. A 2018 fifth-year option would stand to be worth around $8.5MM.

Makes sense to me!!

Would love for the Eagles to make a move on getting Ross, WR out of Washington in 2nd round perhaps, he's a flyer and has pretty good eye/hand coordination w/break away speed, Mike Williams would be a nice pick too, but his injury history scares me some and he's not running the 40 at Combine but will on his PRO DAY? Ok. Must mean he'll try to lose some weight and get whatever is in his circulatory system out by that day for the docs to pick and probe him.

Patriots always make a killing on the draft, taking names folks take a double take at and say, "WHO"? And they end up being pretty good and productive picks.

Would love for the NFL to workout two basketball players as possible TEs, Burton from Iowa St, 6'5 245 with almost an 8 foot wing span and Gholston from Notre Dame, 6'5 255 with solid hands and decent speed, Burton runs a bit better and has a football background in high school at least. We have to remember, All-Pro and future Hall of Famer, TE for the Bolts, Antonio Gates played forward at Kent State for the Flashes.

Draft this year has some loaded talent and some late round guys just might be pretty good darn NFL players. Dak Prescott was a 4th rounder last year but don't forget, Terrell Davis was a late rounder, so was Tom FOKKEN Brady bunch and shit.

QB for Cal, Travis Webb might be a steal for a team willing to let him groom under a QB like a Tom Brady or a Matty Ice Ryan or a Aaron Rodgers for a couple of years.

Good stuff AR!!

GO EAGLES!

Not sure Ross will be there in the 2nd round....

Think the Eagles will get a top notch wide receiver in free agency or trade....ie....Jeffery, Cooks, etc....

The Giants will be looking for a QB in the later rounds & Webb's name is mentioned as a possibility....

Huge COOKS fan!!!!! Had him fantasy last 2 seasons drafted him high make sure I got him!! Hate for him to leave NO though as his fantasy numbers could drop I would think being on a really good team with the Pats who don't have many shootouts. It's a ? how the chemistry would be with Brady, but off hand if they connect Cooks could put better numbers up than Welker IMO! With NO having so many more mouths to feed now with Snead and Thomas it may not be a bad idea for Cooks to move on especially to NE! Will be very interesting........

Im not saying their all better then cooks but brady really doesn't need him....suprises me they offer a #1 which they could use on defense being the patriots....cooks is well worth it if they do....they just don't typically give up 1st rders...

Someone will give much higher than the 32nd tho

Just read that Tenn. is the front runner for Cooks, with New England & Philly right behind them....

It will be interesting to see what transpires in the NFL over the next few days....

I just hate to see him leave NO.....that sucks, but then again Brees' playing days are winding down and without him that entire offense will be a thing from the past Cooks or no Cooks

Malcolm Butler and Brandin Cooks may be on the verge of swapping residencies.

According to Dianna Russini of ESPN, the New England Patriots are considering trading Butler to the New Orleans Saints for Cooks.

This report comes off the heels of New England reportedly signing cornerback Stephon Gilmore to a five year deal worth $14 million per season.

The Patriots have been trying to acquire Cooks via trade by using their first round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. However, because it is at the bottom of the first round at 32nd overall, the Saints declined that offer.

Replacing that pick with Butler certainly ups the ante.

In 2016, Butler was the Patriots No. 1 corner helping his team go on to win Super Bowl LI, while Cooks caught 78 passes last year for 1,173 yards and eight touchdowns.
