While I never was a big fan of the recall situation, and don't think it has much of a valid place in the electoral process, I think we did see what the Citizen's United ruling will mean for our political process in the future. I think it's a frightening thing for each of us as individual voters, no matter who we are.
I have no doubt that Walker had plenty of support in the state, especially from Republicans. I also thing there would have been a good amount of people that were not Republicans that did not like the recall scenario, and I can appreciate that. But the thing that should bother everyone in this country that is not a millionaire or more is that Walker had the backing to the tune of 8-1 in campaign spending for this election, the vast majority coming from outside the state (around 75% or so), and much of it from unnamed sources.
Does anyone think this is a positive thing for state elections, or any election for that matter? That anyone can spend as much as they want - or corporations - or citizens from other countries, I presume, or corporations, or governments from other countries, I presume, on any election now, and we won't know who is spending that money? Funding these candidates? These ballot issues?
How can this be a good thing, for any of us as individuals? Seriously? Step outside your democrat/republican/independent ring for a second and think about it. I think it's the worst thing that has ever happened to individual rights in my lifetime, but I'm sure I'm forgetting something.
