Right behind you
Say what you like, but Pete was a real American who stood up for the Constitutional rights of all of us.

In the 1950s many were called to testify before the vile House Committee on Un-American Affairs, a kangaroo court which falsely accused many of them. Most refused to testify, citing their Fifth Amendment right.

The following is much condensed, but here's is how Pete's testimony went.

Pete: "I refuse to testify based on my Constitutional right".

"So", Tavenner asked, "You're taking the Fifth?"

"No sir", said Pete. "I refuse to answer based on my rights under the First Amendment."

Tavenner didn't get it. "That's crazy. What do you mean, your First Amendment Rights?"

Pete: "I am not going to answer any questions as to my association, my philosophical or religious beliefs or my political beliefs, or how I voted in any election, or any of these private affairs. I think these are very improper questions for any American to be asked, especially under such compulsion as this."

God Love you, Pete. You legacy of fighting for what's right and Human Rights continues. Say hello to Woody, John, Bobby, Abraham and Martin for all of us.......
