The line: Falcons minus-3 The Eagles are the first top-seeded team to ever enter the playoffs as an underdog. It was bound to happen sooner or later; it?s just a surprise that it was ultimately a team as strong as Philadelphia taking points. The Eagles ended the regular season tied with the Patriots for the best point differential in the league at plus-162. They had wedged their way into second-choice in the future market behind the Patriots before MVP candidate quarterback Carson Wentz tore his ACL in Week 14. Nick Foles taking over for Wentz is the entire reason for the creation of this historic point spread.

The matchup: At full strength, the Eagles would be roughly a 6-point favorite over the Falcons. A 9-point swing means the betting market rates Wentz on par with the likes of Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady as the most impactful player in the league. And consequently it means Foles grades out as a mediocre-at-best backup. Foles? statistics dispute that account, however, as most of his career numbers hover around NFL averages. Over a somewhat substantial sample of 49 games, he?s thrown for 61 touchdowns to 29 interceptions with a 7 yards per attempt average. He?s 18-17-1 against the spread lifetime in games where he?s taken the majority of the snaps.

Three of the losses have come in the last three games, though. There?s no defending impotent performances where Foles couldn?t even crack 5 yards per attempt against the Cowboys and Raiders to close the season. But one of the golden rules of sports betting is to not jump to conclusions too quickly, and the Falcons appear to offer another opportunity for Foles to get on track. They?re not great against the pass, ranking 19th in the league by Football Outsiders? DVOA. Their 26-13 upset of the Rams to reach the divisional round also looks less impressive in hindsight. Los Angeles outgained Atlanta by nearly 1.5 yards per play, but was largely undone by losing both of its fumbles. Philadelphia?s defense is even better than Los Angeles? as one of eight units in the league giving up 5 yards per play or less. With a number of defensive starters having rested since Week 17, Philadelphia has enjoyed nearly a month to rest up for this game as compared with Atlanta facing a gauntlet of must-win games.

Interesting read...do you think maybe the Eagles have been playing possum just a little bit the last 2-3 weeks???...Seems like they kept their play calling very elementary, like they were holding Foles back???...I could easily be completely wrong but the last 2 games that I watched it looked a bit fishy :0003

Playing possum is a dangerous approach to NFL games. Several years ago the Patriots threw away (or to use your term played possum) the last several games. The result...they were bounced out of the playoffs. Just one example. Philadelphia is not a super team. They were every good team before Carson Wentz was injured. Now they are just a good team. They should beat Atlanta but...in Vegas the underground* spread is only +0.08 Philadelphia. I disagree with that spread. In my opinion it should be around +2. My point in all of this... Philadelphia is not so talented a team that they can turn it on and off at will. The last couple of weeks may have been who they really are without Carson Wentz. Time will tell

*underground... is a group of elite 'cappers who participate in an invitation only tournament sponsored by several Vegas books. Each invitee must wager $10.000 ($5000 to the house and $5000 to the pool)on each NFL regular season and playoff game. The 'capper with the highest win % wins $1,000,000 or the pool which ever is larger. For the Super Bowl $25.000 must be wagered.

you have some valid ponts.

one thing that bothers me about the falcons , early this morning...

Nearly twice as much money has been bet on Falcons-Eagles than any of the other four playoffs games this weekend at William Hill US in vegas. 74 percent of the money is on Atlanta.

having watched with my brother [who is an Eagle fan of 50 years] Foles try to play Quarterback against the Raiders [Directv we watch all Viking and Eagle games] ] in what was his second start {Week #16} for the injured Wentz there was no playing possum.

Bare in mind the week before the Defense stunk and Foles lite up the Giants sad Defense.

Go to the next week and.........and a sad Oakland D ...........

Sadly there was a QB unsure of himself despite his many starts prior to this game in seasons earlier in his career.

Lets keep in mind homefield throughout the playoffs is still up for grabs This is a BIG GAME ...Play after play he makes the wrong decision.Passes are short of the receiver.Pases are off his back foot. He is playing not to lose and his body language is that of someone who is playing not to get hurt...Which we all know that's a good way to get hurt..

Foles start vs Oakland...and anyone who watched the game saw how sorry he played ..
They get the win and secure homefield ..

now the Eagles have nothing to play for the following week vs Dallas but they start Foles to iron out the gitters because he will see no live action until 1/13/18

well that didn't go so good but rather than risk injury they pulled him and what they have is a QB over the course of 4 1/2 Quarters hasn't shown the ability to lead his team in playoffs.

here are some clips from By ROB MAADDI
AP Pro Football Writer in his write up of the Dallas /Philly game...

Healthy? Yes. Sharp? Not quite.

The Eagles (13-3) rested several starters on a frigid day and played others briefly after securing the NFC's No. 1 seed last week. They'll have two weeks to work on a slumping offense before hosting a playoff game on Jan. 13 or 14.

''I'm not concerned,'' coach Doug Pederson said. ''I have confidence in our guys.''

Nick Foles struggled in one quarter, going 4 of 11 for 39 yards with one interception. Foles was excellent in his first start after Carson Wentz went down for the season, tossing four TD passes in a 34-29 win at the Giants on Dec. 17. But he has followed up with two poor performances.

''I feel great and I know what I can do,'' Foles said. ''I know the guys are confident in me. We expect to execute better. This wasn't acceptable. We know how talented we can be. We can do special stuff.'

Philadelphia's best drive with Foles was the game opener. The Eagles drove to the Cowboys 39 before Torrey Smith dropped a pass on third-and-7. Foles was hurried and threw an incomplete pass on fourth down.

Foles under threw Alshon Jeffery and was picked by Chidobe Awuzie at the Cowboys 48 on Philadelphia's third possession. It was Awuzie's first career interception. The offense went three-and-out on the first unit's fourth and final series.

I touched on this in another thread but wanted to expound on it here to hopefully help in some way...

What the Eagles have is a QB who is playing like a backup the last 4 1/s quarters of live action at the helm and a defense that gave 35 points to the Rams in week # 14 .....and 29 points.. to the Giants in week #15

and they are playing the team that held the Rams to 13 points in LA as the Falcons won 26-13.

Given the unknown...and it is a big unknown I wish you all good luck as long as the Eagles win.

Live wager if I was to....would be my course of action...If he [Foles] is deer in the headlights and this playoff game is to big for him well we know what happens then........

Go Eagles.................

Go Vikings.........
