USC is ready to play Auburn and I hope that 4th string running back plays. Cadilac Williams is an awesome runner but USC has the #1 defensive line in the country and last year this same D-Line held every runner they faced under 100 yards. (USC played the #1 toughest schedule in nation and faced C. Williams, Brown from CO, KSU RB, O. Smith of Oregon, and many more top notch running backs and shut them all down. USC returns everyone on that same D-Line and adds depth, something they did not have last year.

Should be a great game, but if a QB emerges for USC, USC will win by double digits. Otherwise it will go down to the wire.

I can't wait.

Unfortunately not. I am a senior at USC, and also a volunteer manager on the football team. SO i know everything about the football team and players. I get to go on 2 away games, and I chose Notre Dame and then they choose the other game.

However, i think the USC vs Auburn game will be the best game this year in college football. I certainly can't wait, i am counting the days. If USC can come out with a win (which will be very tough), i think we will make a NC run. Even if we lose to Auburn we still hve a shot at a NC run since its first game of year.

Both programs are top 10 in nation this year, many have us both top 5.

USC defense will be #1 or #2 in nation, and Auburn will be top 5 or top 10 defense.

USC has super talent all over the field, except maybe QB. But all we need is the QB to not make mistakes and be efficient. I think USC needs to pass effectively to win this game, and Auburn will not be able to stop our recievers. Especially since AUBURNS DB's are the weak link to there great defense. Even if Auburn has great DB's they still would not stop the recieving corps of USC. Mike Williams who was a top 5 reciever in nation last year as a frosh, has gotten stronger and faster and we recruited the #1 high school reciever in the nation WHitney Lewis (prob. better than mike williams talent wise). He is damn good and he will only be #3 on depth chart at reciever if he is lucky and works hard.

For Auburn to win, they will need a 2 td lead at halftime, and USC QB will have to make mistakes. VERY WELL COULD HAPPEN, otherwise i see USC winning in close game because we are better conditioned and have better athletes. Also our O-Line is a LOT better, College FOOTBALL news ranks USC #1 OL and #1 DL in nation. I agree with DL but OL maybe top 10 but what is important is we will be able to run the ball somewhat and certainly stop or slow down the powerful AU running attack.

I can't wait!!!! If your Auburn fan, feel free to give me your intake or if you have questions about USC. I am not really a homer and i speak the truth and don't exaggerate. If USC had CARSON PALMER back this year, i would be 95% confident USC wins National Championship as long as Carson does not get injured.

USC was the best team in nation last year and we upgraded as a team but unfortunately we don't have a star QB. Hopefully we can at least get mistake free QB play cuz thats basically all we need.

Yea, I'm a huge Auburn Fan - graduated in 2000 - still have a lot of my friends there.
As far as the game goes - I think its going to be a great game - I only wish Keith jackson was going to be doing the play by play

With out a question USC has the best def. line however not to sure about the linebackers or secondary. On offense I know you have a new QB (hope he is not as good as Palmer) - You have one of the best WR in the country.

Thats about all I know on USC.

On Auburn we have 4 good RB a few good WR (breakout year) and a really good TE. You are right def. secondary maybe the weak link but they are all very athletic. The rest of our def is solid.

As far as the game goes I hope AU wins - I think the score will be 10 - 7 Auburn at the half at the end of the 3rd it will be 17 - 10 and at the end of the game 24 - 10. This will be a very close game in the first half - But I don't know if you have ever been to Auburn in August or not - But the air is thick and the humitity is unbearable - it is like breathing hot breath - there is no breeze the temperature will be in the 90's if it rains it only gets worse.
I have however been to So. Cal in August there was a nice breeze and the temp was like 75. There is no doubt that USC is a great team and should be in the top 10. I just fell that this years USC team is not as good as the one from last year - Auburn has a lot to prove but I think that they will. They will be much improved from last years squad and since that team nearly won at USC, plus with the help from the element and the 86,000 + fans (fans that no CA native could ever be ready for - I'm talking RV's on Tues. before games no parking spots for mile in all directions days before Kickoff - Best Fans in the Nation - And if you have never been to an Auburn football game It is the second largest city on sat.s) I just don't think USC can hang in there.

Wish you were going so we catch up

Nice write-up and let me start off by saying don't worry, the QB's we have now are NOWHERE near Carson Palmer. We do however have the #1 high school QB who skipped his senior year and will be better than Palmer, but i doubt he starts at Auburn. TOo tough.

I agree with you having a huge home field advantage. USC played at Kansas St., at Oregon, at Notre Dame, at Washington, at Colorado, at the Orange Bowl, all those places are considered to have major home field advantage. BUt i agree Jordon Hare is TOUGH place to play. No question and i wish USC has that same home field advantage.

Now i disagree with you about the weather. Let me first state that as of now, 11:50am, the weather in L.A (where USC players are currently running and conditioning) the temp. is 81 degrees and 67% humidity. At AUBURN, it is 86 degrees with 66% humidity. Let me tell you we have had a heat wave the last couple weeks in L. A. so that has only helped the players.

In addition, USC has one of the top Strength and Conditioning coaches in the nation. Last season we won most of our games in the 2nd half and last year we did not have depth. We have 4 studs starting on the D-Line, and have 3 quality backups, and then 3-4 STUDS we recruited from high school (#1 recruiting class). So we will have a good rotation on defense so fresh legs all game. Last year we had ZERO depth and we kicked butt on the line all year.

Lastly, i remember UCLA (who USC bitch slaps) came down to the heart of the south and played your arch rival, ALABAMA, and came out with a victory. UCLA players did cramp, but USC is so vastly conditioned over UCLA. I really don't think the weather will be an issue, and last year USC was more conditioned than Auburn. Last years game was really hot, around 90degres or higher.

Will Auburn eat the clock and be able to run the ball?

Will USC be able to pass or move the chains? If not, USC defense will get tired.

Who will not turn the ball over? (i think will be crucial)

Special teams for USC was horrible (except for punting), i am curious to see how much it will improve.

FIELD POSITION with 2 awesome defenses will be important.

Nice write up

I think it will be a real tough game
All I know is that there is nowhere else I had rather be at 5 pm on Sat Aug 30.

Maybe we can bet a hat on the game - I have seen Some others do this

If USC Wins I'll send you an Auburn hat
and
If Auburn wins you send me an USC hat

And if you could through in some Auto's on it that would be great too.

Yes i think that wager is pretty cool. I never bet someone over the internet but you seem like a loyal Aburn fan and trustworthy person. Its cool both of us went to each school, and most people would agree this game could go either way. So this is an even bet and fair bet. Maybe you hve "slight" advantage. lol.

So yes, i accept the wager if you want to do it. I have seen others do it and i think it will be fun.

Sorry to jump into this thread but I just had a few ?'s for you:

I have heard from a few sources that USC might have the most cutting edge S&C in the bizz today. Can you offer me some insight on that? I def believe it, because this team used to be very soft, and they may have been the most physical team I saw last year with exception of Ohio State.

Can you tell me anything about Darnell Bing and how good Grotegood is going to be this year? Kinda reminds me of a poor man's Archuleta.

Darnell Bing is a pure specimen. Bing is 6.3 225 pure muscle and runs a legit, even 4.4 40. Coach Carroll said he was the best high school athlete he has ever seen. He has linebacker size and hitting ability and combines it with the speed of the fastest wide receivers. He's great in man coverage and can play the run equally well. Bing is already a starter at Strong Safety for USC as frosh, but he also could play running back and dominate. In spring practice he was ripping 10, 15, 5, 20 yard gains repeatedly. Watch for this kid he will be a star.

Matt Grootegood is one of my favorite players. He was HIGHLY rated safety out of high school but Pete moved him to linebacker. We had Troy Polomolou and Pete wants all the best players on the field. He is 5.11 and 205, so he is way undersized but he has AMAZING football instincts and he is real old school. Never celebrates and just means business. Watch him on linebacker blitzes and he is always around the ball. Great great player, truly a football player.

Your right, Pete Carroll hired S&C coach Chris Carlisle right away during his first year. The coach came from Tennessee where he was an assistant, and its a good story too because he had cancer and Carroll told him i want you anyways and we will beat this cancer together and he did recover and now he has great loyalty and love for USC. It truly is amazing what Pete Carroll has done for USC and there is no doubt in my mind that USC will contend for NC every year. Now back to Carlisle. I copied and pasted some of the good points Carlisle said in an interview he did while back.

"We split the week into four days (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday) with Monday and Thursday being our explosive movement where we work speed and agility. Tuesdays and Fridays are our strength days, squats and presses. Every day we work core. You have to start off with that right away, it's a big part of our development with the abs and lower back. Without that we can't get anything else done and I think that's a process we went through where we were better in that area and it paid off on the field. People will ask "how much can a guy bench?" and I don't think that has anything to do with being a good football player. The bench press is a minor movement whereas the core is a major movement and once your core is better then you're a better football player all around. So every day we do core, plyometrics and med ball. We do our Olympic lifts, we do one-legged movements because football is a game of one-legged movements. You can't squat by itself and be a good football player. We squat quite a bit as a strength base but we don't say that's all we do with our legs.

Carlisle works on explosive movements where we work speed and agility. We work our plyometrics, our jumping drills, we're looking to get the uninhibited movement with the three joints, we do med ball movement with 14 ball med balls trying to work the range of motion and core, speed and agility, anything that makes for a football player."

One of the reasons we don't spend a lot of time in here is because football games aren't played in the weight room. You can go look at the record wall in the weight room and out of 180 records listed over 100 of them are guys who have played in the last three years so our strength is fine. We set the new SC record a couple times last year in bench, the squat and the power clean. Of the 18 top names we've got 17 of them with Junior Seau being the only guy from the past and he's not a bad name to sit behind. So when people ask "are you gonna get stronger?" I say we're fine physically.

We videotape our kids throughout the training process. Men are such visual learners

We're a little nutty on what we do, it's all consistent and organized and planned out but we ask these kids to do a lot. They played their last game on January 2nd and were back in here on January 16th. It was the same last year, the preparation for Notre Dame didn't start the week before the game, it started in the off-season. Each athlete has his own set of good and bad things we need to work on. Body position, agility, change of direction, speed, catch-up speed. It's a lot of different things and it all deals with speed and power.

The offensive line was more physical. Our defensive line was more agile and I think they can get even better. Kenechi Udeze came in here as a 350 pound guy, last year he ran like a 300 pound guy and this year I want to get him running like the 275 pound guy that he is. That's the type of progression we're looking for."

This might have been more info than you wanted but its exciting times now at USC so its not hard to write or find info.

Tigerfan, i found a 2 similar style hats I think are pretty cool. Here are the links to choose from when USC wins :D Tell me what you think of the hats. If you have another suggestion, feel free to let me know. As for USC hats, go ahead and choose whatever fits your style. The USC baseball hats are pretty cool and very popular. It has the words SC in front but in some special writing. Cardinal and Gold are our colors.

Thank you very much! That was outstanding and was not too much info. That is the kind of stuff I like to hear. In College Football I put more stock into that kind of info than just stats etc. USC finally looked like a team last year and they are going to be tough for years to come, as yet another sleeping Giant has been awaken. My Giant (Nebraska) was put to sleep last year but we have shown some encouraging signs this spring, although nothng to the extent of USC. I will post info if anyone is interested.

They have USC visors at the USC bookstore. Just tell me what color you would prefer and i could purchase it there. Or i could describe each visor they have and you can choose it, and won't be a problem for me because i will be at school every day. I did find a visor online, here is the link.

Escrow, in 2006 USC plays NEBRASKA, and i think at nebraska in 2007 (that will be tough). Thought you might find that interesting. Hopefully Pete Carroll is still coaching USC and Nebraska gets back to elite status, should be an awesome game, just like the USC vs Auburn game this year.

I am curious, what do you think of your head coach? Since Pete Carroll came to USC, i am convinced head coach is the most important thing in a program. Too many years USC has wasted its talent with sub par coaching.

Been looking forward to this series for a long time. The big reason Nebraska has slipped from the elite can be directly attested to none other than that Boob Frank Soilich. Comparing him and Tom Osborne is like putting a Cadillac Escalade next to an AMC Gremlin with a painted on racing stripe. Solich made numerous personnel, coaching and other decisions that damn near ruined this program. While Solich has always been a man of great integrity, he cannot make hard decisions and let friendship get in the way of too much. Pete has definitely made all the diff there at USC, and bringing in Uncle Norm doesn't hurt either. Many feel that regardless of our results this year, that Solich is gone and that Pelini (the Hot new DC from Green Bay) will be the next man to take over. Another thing that did us in, which was the opposite of USC, was that our talent steadily declined since 98 as did the coaching. Solich's recruitng coordinator who was finally "reassigned" (gee I love athletics. Do a schitt job and get another 120K per year position). Dave Gillespie made some head spinning decsions in recruiting and they really slipped badly behind the power curve under his regime. The new staff rallied big time this spring as they went from 7 commitments in Early December to a full class by signing day with a few really good players. The new recruiting coordinator Tim Downing from Purdue is a real go getter and already has NU in on some very fine players again this year. But the general consensus is that as long as Solich is around, we will always be playing checkers while the rest of the Big 12 plays chess.

Nice write-up and made me laugh. I always liked Nebraska and their power running game. I love having a strong running game and wear down your opponents. USC is more 50/50 which is good especially since defenses are getting better and you need to be able to pass to help set up the run. I remember Nebraska played Florida in bowl game, think it was florida or maybe tenn. and just tore them up on the ground. I loved it. Had a few 4th quarter drives all on the ground, defense knows its a running play but still can't stop it. Great thing to see.

My question is do you like the power running attack you have or do you wish to open it up more. I think that can also attribute to Nebraska declining. I think you have to be able to pass the ball or least show a defense you can pass the ball. If I was playing Nebraska i line 8-9 guys in the box, make you beat us with the pass. So is your team going to keep same running tradition or maybe change offense a little bit.

Lastly, there is one thing i absolutely hate about Nebraska and most college football teams. I hate it when you play weak OOC schedule and even worse division 2 opponents. I often see you playing TROY ST. or even weak division 1 opponents. I would hate it if USC went that route to rack up W's. USC always plays a tough schedule and we play anyone anywhere and we prove it. USC wanted to play Miami this year before Auburn (how brutal is that) and Miami backed out. USC has open dates next year and wants Miami, and Miami still wants no part of us. I know the worst team is Kansas St. in terms of scheduling crappy opponents.

Your playing Oklahoma St. (average), Penn St. (quality), Southern Miss (average at best, good team because of crappy conference), and Utah St. (is this a joke) and Troy St. (embarrassing)

USC last year played, AUBURN, @ CO, @ Kansas St., Notre Dame.
This year, @AUBURN (top 10 team), BYU (respectable team), Hawaii (we will win but they will def. be going to a bowl game), and @ Notre Dame (play them every year) , and we wanted Miami to add who backed out.

So give me your opinion on this topic. As a fan, i like watching USC play competitive teams and would never pay to see USC play div. 2 school. I think this is why we need a playoff system because teams like USC, ND, Michigan, UCLA etc..., always play tough brutal OOC games while others go the easy route.

<B> Scott, I call 'em how I see 'em LOL. Nebraska used the power running game out of necessity. Years ago, Dr Tom realized that the only way he was going to beat and compete with Oklahoma was to be like them. Therefore he went from the wide open air it out, to the power option I oriented offense. New OC Barney Cotton has stressed the 65/35 run pass balance which will be favorable for us and has really simplified things as well. USC can air it out a little more, b/c the Pac 10 is more of a passing oriented offense and the weather is a little better. I think most teams will tend to run more in worse climate. But Norm has that offense clicking regardless. Another reason our power game no longer worked, is that we had a bunch of fat ass pigs on our OL. Gone were the 500 lb 4.9 40 freaks we had that we sent to the NFL with regularity. We have really suffered on our FB play as well. NU hasn't really had a great RB since Ahman Green. Even in the mid 90's when Super Steve had the offense of the future and our "archaic" offense could't do squat, with the right personnel you can never go wrong with power football. Dr. Tom also knew when to throw the ball and used the run to set up the pass. Solich who thank God is no longer calling his own plays never understood that concept. When you have inferior athletes facing 10 man fronts, of course your rushing totals will go down and you won't be able to throw for squat when running for your life. QB Jammal Lord is actually a pretty good player and can throw some if he has the time. Yes in the 99 Fiesta Bowl, Neb ripped off 3 consecutive 90 plus yard drives all on the ground. At one point their offense injured 10 Tenn defensive players. But our S/C had also been steadily going down the tubes. The Legendary Boyd Eppley has finally been reassigned and a breath of fresh air in Brian Bailey is already making a difference. But you can only put so much paint and fuel conditioner in a Hyundai (which is the caliber of player we have at many positions right now). </B>

<B> I like the power game if you have the right people, but those days are gone. OC Barney Cotton is cognizant of the fact that more teams are ganging up on the line of scrimmage. That is what many teams did to us last year, and we had no speed in our backfield and no blocking at all. Also with Lord being a first year QB, he checked off into the wrong call numerous times, although he got better as the year progressed. A big problem for us last year was conditioning. By the end of the game, it really shwoed how soft we were on both sides of the ball. The Huskers are looking to throw it about 25 times a game now and have recruited a few nice run pass qb's in the mix.</B>

<B> While I would love to see us play a Notre Dame schedule every year, a lot of it is about getting home games. Most teams now a days need 6 or 7 homers to turn a profit. Many teams want a home and home and that is why it is very hard for teams to play a bunch of marquee games. They need to buy victories, not only for their BCS standing, but the Athletic Dept as well, so that can always get those extra home games. Nebraska actually played some nice schedules under Tom Osborne. I know the Troy State and Mc Neese STate things are unforgivable, but we have also had some big name teams like ARkansas and PItt back out on us in recent years as well. Kansas State HC Bill Snyder was smart to use this strategy when he was rebuilding. But now that KSU is a national team, they do def need to step up. They have made some strides, but need to totally eliminate the Austin Peays etc. </B>

Your playing Oklahoma St. (average), Penn St. (quality), Southern Miss (average at best, good team in crappy conference), and Utah St. (is this a joke) and Troy St. (embarrassing)

<B> True that, but Okie State is a conference game. Any non-conference road game is always tough. Many of these games are scheduled 7 -10 years in advance b/c it is so cut throat to get games anymore. We are guilty of cupcakes as are many others, but it is all about once again getting that extra home game and not shooting your whole wad before conference play. </b>

<B> SC is the schitt in that dept. Mike Garrett I think does that too, b/c attendance was so poor that he needed to do something to get more gate and more tv. I respect SC for always playing that kind of schedule. It has probably cost them over the years. But the bottom line is that respect don't get you into the BCS sometimes. </b>

<B> I think some of it is just a matter of necessity even though it sucks for us as fans. Again, the most prohibitive factor is trying to get as many home teams as you can. The Huskers get more from a home date from Utah State then they would with a raod game nationally televised on ABC vs. Penn State. I dont' think the playoff system would solve that problem. But a playoff in my opinion is definitely needed. I felt that USC was the best team at the end of the year last year and would have wiped the floor with Miami or Ohio State (even though those cocksuckers hit reallllyyyyy hard). I can't wait for August 23. I am also a Trojan fan, b/c I was born in West Covina and have spent a lot of time in the Southland. But I don't miss the traffic and taxes!!! FIGHT ON!</B>
