Nice write-up and made me laugh. I always liked Nebraska and their power running game. I love having a strong running game and wear down your opponents. USC is more 50/50 which is good especially since defenses are getting better and you need to be able to pass to help set up the run. I remember Nebraska played Florida in bowl game, think it was florida or maybe tenn. and just tore them up on the ground. I loved it. Had a few 4th quarter drives all on the ground, defense knows its a running play but still can't stop it. Great thing to see.
<B> Scott, I call 'em how I see 'em LOL. Nebraska used the power running game out of necessity. Years ago, Dr Tom realized that the only way he was going to beat and compete with Oklahoma was to be like them. Therefore he went from the wide open air it out, to the power option I oriented offense. New OC Barney Cotton has stressed the 65/35 run pass balance which will be favorable for us and has really simplified things as well. USC can air it out a little more, b/c the Pac 10 is more of a passing oriented offense and the weather is a little better. I think most teams will tend to run more in worse climate. But Norm has that offense clicking regardless. Another reason our power game no longer worked, is that we had a bunch of fat ass pigs on our OL. Gone were the 500 lb 4.9 40 freaks we had that we sent to the NFL with regularity. We have really suffered on our FB play as well. NU hasn't really had a great RB since Ahman Green. Even in the mid 90's when Super Steve had the offense of the future and our "archaic" offense could't do squat, with the right personnel you can never go wrong with power football. Dr. Tom also knew when to throw the ball and used the run to set up the pass. Solich who thank God is no longer calling his own plays never understood that concept. When you have inferior athletes facing 10 man fronts, of course your rushing totals will go down and you won't be able to throw for squat when running for your life. QB Jammal Lord is actually a pretty good player and can throw some if he has the time. Yes in the 99 Fiesta Bowl, Neb ripped off 3 consecutive 90 plus yard drives all on the ground. At one point their offense injured 10 Tenn defensive players. But our S/C had also been steadily going down the tubes. The Legendary Boyd Eppley has finally been reassigned and a breath of fresh air in Brian Bailey is already making a difference. But you can only put so much paint and fuel conditioner in a Hyundai (which is the caliber of player we have at many positions right now). </B>
My question is do you like the power running attack you have or do you wish to open it up more. I think that can also attribute to Nebraska declining. I think you have to be able to pass the ball or least show a defense you can pass the ball. If I was playing Nebraska i line 8-9 guys in the box, make you beat us with the pass. So is your team going to keep same running tradition or maybe change offense a little bit.
<B> I like the power game if you have the right people, but those days are gone. OC Barney Cotton is cognizant of the fact that more teams are ganging up on the line of scrimmage. That is what many teams did to us last year, and we had no speed in our backfield and no blocking at all. Also with Lord being a first year QB, he checked off into the wrong call numerous times, although he got better as the year progressed. A big problem for us last year was conditioning. By the end of the game, it really shwoed how soft we were on both sides of the ball. The Huskers are looking to throw it about 25 times a game now and have recruited a few nice run pass qb's in the mix.</B>
Lastly, there is one thing i absolutely hate about Nebraska and most college football teams. I hate it when you play weak OOC schedule and even worse division 2 opponents. I often see you playing TROY ST. or even weak division 1 opponents. I would hate it if USC went that route to rack up W's. USC always plays a tough schedule and we play anyone anywhere and we prove it. USC wanted to play Miami this year before Auburn (how brutal is that) and Miami backed out. USC has open dates next year and wants Miami, and Miami still wants no part of us. I know the worst team is Kansas St. in terms of scheduling crappy opponents.
<B> While I would love to see us play a Notre Dame schedule every year, a lot of it is about getting home games. Most teams now a days need 6 or 7 homers to turn a profit. Many teams want a home and home and that is why it is very hard for teams to play a bunch of marquee games. They need to buy victories, not only for their BCS standing, but the Athletic Dept as well, so that can always get those extra home games. Nebraska actually played some nice schedules under Tom Osborne. I know the Troy State and Mc Neese STate things are unforgivable, but we have also had some big name teams like ARkansas and PItt back out on us in recent years as well. Kansas State HC Bill Snyder was smart to use this strategy when he was rebuilding. But now that KSU is a national team, they do def need to step up. They have made some strides, but need to totally eliminate the Austin Peays etc. </B>
Your playing Oklahoma St. (average), Penn St. (quality), Southern Miss (average at best, good team in crappy conference), and Utah St. (is this a joke) and Troy St. (embarrassing)
<B> True that, but Okie State is a conference game. Any non-conference road game is always tough. Many of these games are scheduled 7 -10 years in advance b/c it is so cut throat to get games anymore. We are guilty of cupcakes as are many others, but it is all about once again getting that extra home game and not shooting your whole wad before conference play. </b>
USC last year played, AUBURN, @ CO, @ Kansas St., Notre Dame.
This year, @AUBURN (top 10 team), BYU (respectable team), Hawaii (we will win but they will def. be going to a bowl game), and @ Notre Dame (play them every year) , and we wanted Miami to add who backed out.
<B> SC is the schitt in that dept. Mike Garrett I think does that too, b/c attendance was so poor that he needed to do something to get more gate and more tv. I respect SC for always playing that kind of schedule. It has probably cost them over the years. But the bottom line is that respect don't get you into the BCS sometimes. </b>
So give me your opinion on this topic. As a fan, i like watching USC play competitive teams and would never pay to see USC play div. 2 school. I think this is why we need a playoff system because teams like USC, ND, Michigan, UCLA etc..., always play tough brutal OOC games while others go the easy route.
<B> I think some of it is just a matter of necessity even though it sucks for us as fans. Again, the most prohibitive factor is trying to get as many home teams as you can. The Huskers get more from a home date from Utah State then they would with a raod game nationally televised on ABC vs. Penn State. I dont' think the playoff system would solve that problem. But a playoff in my opinion is definitely needed. I felt that USC was the best team at the end of the year last year and would have wiped the floor with Miami or Ohio State (even though those cocksuckers hit reallllyyyyy hard). I can't wait for August 23. I am also a Trojan fan, b/c I was born in West Covina and have spent a lot of time in the Southland. But I don't miss the traffic and taxes!!! FIGHT ON!</B>
