Here are my views on Fridays game.
NY Yankees (Wells) @ Boston (Martinez) (7:05 EST)
Boston entered this series 2.5 games back of the Yankees for the lead in the AL East. This game will have the best pitching matchup of the weekend, with David Wells taking on Pedro Martinez. Wells hasn't been pitching his best as of late. Over his last four starts, he has allowed 18 runs on 39 hits in 26 innings. That averages out to 4.5 runs on ten hits in 6.5 innings. That kind of performance will not get the job done against Boston on Friday.
In fact, the last time he faced Boston he allowed eight runs and didn't make it out of the sixth inning. Unlike Wells, Martinez has been on the top of his game recently. Over Pedro's last four starts, he has allowed two runs on 18 hits, and has pitched seven full innings each start. In comparing Martinez to Wells, Pedro has allowed as many hits in his last four starts as Wells has allowed runs. No doubt the stats point towards a Boston victory, however, I am not hear to argue that Martinez should not be favourite for this game, of course he should. What I will argue is that he is such a high favourite.
David Wells might not be no Pedro Martinez, but he might actually be better, let me explain. Wells is 12-3 on the year and owns an ERA of 3.83, numbers which are certainly impressive, yet away from Yankee Stadium Wells has gone a perfect 7-0 with an ERA of 2.43. The Yanks have won 14 of Wells 18 starts including all 8 away. He has great control and to emphasise this he has walked just six batters all year. Yes thats right, a truly amazing SIX.
The Pin Stripes have hit better on the road and I am not saying they will find it easy to get to Martinez, as it won't be easy for the Red Sox to get to Wells. The Red Sox may well win the game, but arguments can be made for Wells and the Bronx Bombers to win also.
Conclusion:
So when you see a team who owns the best record in the A.L. and a team that has a pitcher who has yet to lose on the road and you can get them as a good price puppy at around +180, you just have to jump all over them.
