Cardinals deal RB Jones to Bucs for WR Walker

The long-awaited trade of former Cardinals first-round pick Thomas Jones has finally been consummated.

"We traded Thomas Jones for Marquise Walker," Arizona coach Dave McGinnis told SportsLine.com of the trade with Tampa Bay. "Marquise is a young guy who will fit right in with this young group of receivers we have. I think it's mutually beneficial to both parties."

In three disappointing seasons in Arizona, Jones started just 15 games, played in 39, and recorded 1,264 yards rushing. He also caught a respectable 73 balls during this stretch. Still, such numbers were far from acceptable for the seventh overall selection in the 2000 draft.

"The Buccaneers have a great organization, great players and great coaches," Jones said. "Hopefully I can help the Bucs win another Super Bowl."

The former Virginia Cavalier was mired by freakish injuries as well as serious illness during his short stay in the desert.

"This is a trade that should be good for both parties," Buccaneers general manager Rich McKay said.

"Thomas will have an opportunity to come in here and compete, and he certainly has the traits to be a productive player for us. Marquise was caught in a situation where playing time would have been limited and, therefore, this trade will give him a chance to go and compete for more playing time."

The Buccaneers are in need of new blood in the backfield at starter.

Michael Pittman has been was indicted on charges he used his Hummer to ram a car carrying his wife, 2-year-old son and a baby sitter. He is being charged with aggravated assault and his future in now shrouded in doubt.

Ironically, Pittman is man who outplayed Jones when the two played together in Arizona. When he left for the Bucs last year via free agency, the door was opened for Jones to take the position. Instead, he wore out his welcome and the Cardinals this offseason added future Hall Of Famer Emmitt Smith to the roster.

Walker was the Bucs' third-round pick in the 2002 draft and has impressive size at 6-2, 219 pounds. The Cardinals are in desperate need of depth at wideout and Walker's potential gives him a decent shot with Arizona.

I think both of these guys still have potential. I like this deal more for Arizona, because they need somebody to catch the ball.

I don't really know anymore. I've tride to "cap" these guys when I've done fantasy pools, but these guys have blown too many opportunities for me.

Out of the two, I think Jones still has the chance to be successful.

These guys both failed in Arizona when they had:

(a) A fairly solid line
(b) a good QB Jake Plummer (I'll get arguments there)
(c) a pretty good passing game with David Boston/Frank Sanders

Although their defense stunk during these times, both of these RB's have shown virtually ZERO ability in a pretty good situation. I know sometimes a new environment might help these guys, but for now I could care less about them.

Actually I think this is a bad move for Thomas Jones, because now he won't get to play Seattle twice a year :D

Marquis Walker on the other hand is a guy to keep an eye on....
