player info
Daniel Briere, Buffalo Sabres - As stated yesterday, Briere suffered a groin/hamstring injury during an off-ice workout Wednesday. It is not known exactly how serious his injury is but he will accompany the Sabres on their upcoming multi-game roadtrip while being listed as day-to-day. We'd guess that he will miss at least a couple of games but since the team did not put him on injured reserve, there's a chance he could be ready for next week.

Igor Larionov, New Jersey Devils - Larionov is questionable for Thursday's game against the Maple Leafs after a collision in practice appeared to injure his knee or ankle. He was helped off the ice and didn't speak to reporters but the Devils don't believe the injury is serious. If Larionov can't play, it is expected that Michael Rupp will make his season debut in his place.

Turner Stevenson, New Jersey Devils -Stevenson (groin surgery) said he plans to skate lightly today and might be ready to play in about ten days. Stevenson added that he is certain the testicular procedure he underwent has eliminated the groin problems he suffered last season.

Tommy Albelin, New Jersey Devils - The Devils re-signed unrestricted free agent Albelin to a one-year contract yesterday. He will join the team immediately and could play as early as tonight against the Maple Leafs. On a team that already has Scott Niedermayer, Brian Rafalski and Scott Stevens, Albelin has virtually no fantasy value.

Brian Leetch, New York Rangers - Leetch still has not practiced after bruising his ankle almost a month and a half ago. He's been on the ice skating on his own now and again but isn't especially close to returning. Don't expect anything from him until November at the earliest.

John LeClair, Philadelphia Flyers - The Flyers hope that LeClair will be able to begin skating this weekend in Phoenix. The winger, who is recovering from a fractured foot, would then hope to be back in the lineup Tuesday against the Kings. We'll keep you posted on his status.

Ramzi Abid, Pittsburgh Penguins - Abid will make his season debut Thursday against the Canadiens, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He will play on the team's second line.

Bryan McCabe, Toronto Maple Leafs - McCabe skated for the second consecutive day yesterday afternoon and reported no problems. The defenseman, who is making a speedy recovery from knee surgery, hopes to be cleared for full-contact practice by Saturday and then would try to be back in the lineup a week after that.

Alexander Mogilny, Toronto Maple Leafs - Mogilny had hoped to get on the ice today to test out his strained groin but after a consultation with the team's medical staff, he has been told to stop skating for at least two days. Groin injuries are tricky for hockey players, especially players like Mogilny who rely so much on their speed. As a result, don't expect him to rush back quickly with a reasonable return being sometime next week at the very earliest.

Jason Allison, Los Angeles Kings - Allison missed yesterday's morning skate (non-contact) after reportedly not feeling well, reports the LA Times. This is bad news for a player recovering from whiplash/concussion. He remains sidelined indefinitely and will only begin contact practice once his concussion-related symptoms subside. When that will be no one knows but this season is already turning very ugly for the talented center.

Adam Deadmarsh, Los Angeles Kings - Deadmarsh also missed yesterday's morning skate after re-aggravating a groin injury that he suffered during the first week of training camp. This is on top of the concussion he still has not recovered which all but means that he won't be back anytime soon. If you have the bench spot available on your fantasy team, you might as well keep him around, however, it's getting awfully close to the point where you'd be better off having someone who can actually play.

Mike Cammalleri, Los Angeles Kings - Cammalleri skated hard for the first time since suffering a sprained left knee ligament in preseason play, reports the LA Times. He is only working on non-contact drills at the moment and is about a month away from returning.

Eric Daze, Chicago Blackhawks - Daze missed Wednesday's practice after he woke up with a "stiff back", reports the Chicago Sun-Times. This is troubling news for the big right winger as he has an extensive history of back related problems and in fact, missed 15 games last year due to back surgery. His status won't be determined until later today but this is awful news for a Hawks team that has already lost Alexei Zhamnov to back surgery for at least six weeks.

Martin Skoula, Colorado Avalanche - Skoula skated Wednesday but did not take part in contact drills. He is not expected to play against the Wild while still recuperating from a bruised foot.

Jere Lehtinen, Dallas Stars - Lehtinen had a MRI on Tuesday, and coach Dave Tippett said the test didn't show anything out of the ordinary. Lehtinen obviously wasn't ready to play Wednesday and is still listed as day-to-day but could return Friday.

Brett Hull, Detroit Red Wings - Hull missed Wednesday's practice due to a sore lower back, reports the Detroit News. He is questionable for tonight's game against the Canucks but will probably end up playing. If he can't go, rookie Jiri Hudler will make his NHL debut instead.

Dallas Drake, St. Louis Blues - Drake will return to the Blues lineup for tonight's game against the Predators. The winger, who still has not completely recovered from a facial injury after being struck with a puck, will play the game with a partial face shield while on a line with Petr Cajanek and Jeff Heerema.

goalie info

Pasi Nurminen, Atlanta Thrashers - Nurminen will be the starter for Thursday's game against the Capitals, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

David Aebischer, Colorado Avalanche - Aebischer will be the starter for Thursday's game against the Wild, reports the Rocky Mountain News. Rookie Phil Sauve could get the start two days later in Edmonton but we'll try and get more information on this as the game draws closer.

Manny Fernandez, Minnesota Wild - Fernandez will be the starter for Thursday's game against the Avalanche, reports the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. If he plays well and/or wins, he may get a second consecutive start on Saturday - a rare feat for a Wild goaltender over the past couple of years.

Tomas Vokoun, Nashville Predators - Vokoun will be the starter for Thursday's game against the Blues, reports the Nashville Tennessean.

Jeff Hackett, Philadelphia Flyers - Hackett will be the starter for Thursday's game against the Sharks, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Brian Boucher, Phoenix Coyotes - Boucher will be the starter for Thursday's game against the Lightning, reports the Arizona Republic.

Sebastien Caron, Pittsburgh Penguins - Caron will be the starter for Thursday's game against the Canadiens, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. As we mentioned the other day, rookie Marc-Andre Fleury is slated to start this weekend against the Red Wings.

Evgeni Nabokov, San Jose Sharks - Nabokov will be the starter for Thursday's game against the Flyers, reports the San Jose Mercury.

Chris Osgood, St. Louis Blues - Osgood will be the starter for Thursday's game against the Predators, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Nikolai Khabibulin, Tampa Bay Lightning - Khabibulin will be the starter for Thursday's game against the Coyotes, reports the St. Petersburg Times.

Martin Biron, Buffalo Sabres - Biron is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Oilers.

Jocelyn Thibault, Chicago Blackhawks - Thibault is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Blue Jackets.

Marc Denis, Columbus Blue Jackets - Denis is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Blackhawks.

Dominik Hasek, Detroit Red Wings - Hasek is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Canucks.

Tommy Salo, Edmonton Oilers - Salo is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Sabres.

Jose Theodore, Montreal Canadiens - Theodore is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Penguins.

Martin Brodeur, New Jersey Devils - Brodeur is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Maple Leafs.

Mike Dunham, New York Rangers - Dunham is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Thrashers.

Ed Belfour, Toronto Maple Leafs - Belfour is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Devils.

Dan Cloutier, Vancouver Canucks - Cloutier is the probable starter for Thursday's game against the Red Wings. We're not really sure about this one as Cloutier had an average game in a loss to the Blue Jackets earlier in the week, while Johan Hedberg earned a shutout in his first start of the year. We'll list Cloutier as the probable starter but an update before gametime might be forthcoming. Check back later.

Andrew Raycroft, Boston Bruins - Raycroft continued his stellar play last night, stopping 27 shots en route to a 2-0 victory over the Stars. Coach Mike Sullivan has yet to officially say which of his goalies is #1 but Raycroft's performance so far this year has basically solidified the fact that he will at the very least split starts with Felix Potvin. As a result, both goalies have a good amount of fantasy value and should not remain available in all except the smallest of leagues. Raycroft has the better long-term potential and is an excellent player to have in keeper or carry-over leagues.

Sean Burke, Phoenix Coyotes - Burke was brilliant again yesterday, stopping 29 shots to beat the Panthers 2-1 and help the Coyotes begin their season with a three-game winning streak. Burke, who will not dress tonight and instead will fly to Phoenix to prepare for his next start on Saturday, is one of the league's best, yet most underrated, goalies. Now that Phoenix is winning (and who knows how long that will last), Burke is no doubt a top-five goalie - as long as he stays healthy, something which has been a huge problem for him the past year or two.

Kevin Weekes, Carolina Hurricanes - The Florida Panthers have complained about the statistics recorded at Hurricanes' games namely the shots on goal and faceoffs won numbers. Panthers coach Mike Keenan feels as if the officials in charge of keeping these figures for Canes games are low-balling, though he errorneously feels that it's something that is influenced by the Carolina organization. In actuality, it's the NHL which hires independent statisticians to keep track of the stats but Keenan might have a point as even the Hurricanes have complained about this in the past. There's nothing that will be really done to address this situation but we thought we'd mention it because if it's true, Weekes is probably the player most affected by this all.

Curtis Joseph, Detroit Red Wings - Joseph is almost ready to play in a game, reports the Detroit News. The goalie, who is recovering from off-season minor ankle surgery, has been practicing for the past 1-2 weeks and faces live shots for almost an hour every day. Once he is ready to return, expect the Wings to play him in a few games in an attempt to showcase him to other teams. How this will all work out with Dominik Hasek and Manny Legace around should be interesting to see. Hasek won't want to backup Joseph nor will he want to be scratched. Joseph has to play if he's going to be traded and Legace, one of the league's best backups, needs action too or he'll get rusty.
