Seems like this would make the most sense... take the top 8 BCS teams and play 3 weeks of games, using the current bowl format.
I don't like taking conference champs, because then you eliminate teams that are in the top 8, and you include teams that don't belong there.
How would this sound for a 1st round:
#8 Wisconsin vs. #1 Ohio State
#7 West Virginiai vs. #2 Michigan
#6 Arkansas vs #3 USC
#5 Florida vs #4 Notre Dame
The first round alone would give us some great, great games (although this does feel like a BIG 10 conference tourney, with 3 of the 8 from the Big 10... but if those are the best according to the BCS, so be it)...
I would guess the following winners:
Ohio State
Michigan
USC (they'd win the rematch)
Florida
Then 2nd round you'd have:
#1 Ohio State vs. #5 Florida
#2 Michigan vs. #3 USC
Another set of great games.....
Then, my guess would be:
Ohio State and Michigan would win so, we'd finally have the rematch that we should have on a NEUTRAL field - which would make this an even better game then last weekend....
#1 Ohio State vs. #2 Michigan.
And Ohio State would win the national title.
This would make the BCS even more interesting, as teams would be jockying to get into the top 8, and possibly, wondering how their matchup would change as the seedings change each week....
Heck, they could have a BCS show just like they have an NCAA selection show - imagine the excitement of watching the final BCS to see the seedings and matchups....
On a selfish note, an additional advantage would be that Wisconsin would not get screwed by being a top BCS team (#8) and not even getting into a BCS bowl. I'm sure y'all can argue if they should be #8, but the fact is, they are, and yet they have no shot at a BCS bowl, no matter how far they move up... that doesn't seem right...
This seems so easy, but for some reason the powers that be don't like a playoff system...
