Yonkers? Thursday Pick-5 offers $25,000 guaranteed pool

Wednesday, February 26, 2014 - by Frank Drucker, publicity director, Empire City at Yonkers Raceway

Yonkers, NY --- You?ve been put on alert and even given extra time for homework.

Since no one took down Yonkers Raceway?s Tuesday night Pick-5 -- complete with its $10,000 guarantee -- the entire pool (minus takeout) of $7,500 gets rolled over. That carryover turns into a $25,000 guaranteed pool into Thursday night?s (Feb. 27) program.

The Pick-5 is a 50 cent base wager offered on races five through nine nightly. It has no consolation payoff, meaning if no one selects all five winners (as was the case Tuesday), the entire pool (minus takeout) moves to the next racing program.

The Pick-5 offers a $10,000 guaranteed pool every Monday and Tuesday (in conjunction with the United States Trotting Association?s Strategic Wagering Program), with program pages for those ?guarantee? days available for perusal at www.yonkersraceway.com

WTF is takeout %...........

Monticello dispute discussed on worldwide radio broadcast
Thursday, February 27, 2014 - from the Monticello Harness Horsemen's Association

Monticello, NY --- On the afternoon of Tuesday (Feb. 25), Joseph Faraldo, attorney for the Monticello Harness Horsemen's Association, discussed the issues surrounding the current contract dispute between the Association and Monticello Raceway Management with host Steve Byk on the "At the Races" broadcast of the Thoroughbred Racing Radio Network.

Napolitano celebrates 6,000th win

Pompano Beach, FL ---George Napolitano, Jr. reached yet another milestone in his career by winning his 6,000th race, a feat which puts him in the top 60 among drivers that have competed in the two century history of the sport.

The Smithtown, N.Y. native reached the lofty plateau on Feb. 22 with Lily's Hi Ho, competing out of the Peter Pellegrino Stable.

As successful as his career has become, "Nap," now 47, began his career quite late at the age of 26 and in a very inauspicious manner -- his first 21 drives came in qualifying events at Pompano Park in 1992.

His first pari-mutuel victory came on Jan. 28, 1993 with the pacer Wrapped -- at 13-1 -- in 1:58.2.

He went on to post 41 victories in his first year of competition, accounting for purses of $86,537.

It has been, pretty much, an uphill climb reaching new plateaus of success each year as the old century ended and the new one began. During the initial seven years of the new millennium, George established himself as one of the premier trainers in the sport, recording four straight years with a "batting" average over .400 -- the pinnacle coming in 2006 at .459.

Shortly thereafter, "Nap" concentrated on catch-driving, a skill which has put him in high demand.

In 2010, he won 746 races, tops in North America, and followed that with victory totals of 541, 644 and, last year, 551 to vault himself within range of 6,000 wins.

George now has amassed close to $50 million in purse earnings for owners, an amazing statistic since he rarely gets the opportunity to compete in the "big money" purses -- $100,000 and over.

His success has come, mostly, in "overnight" races, so it's more than apropos that he reached number 6,000 with a mare competing in an overnight event with a claiming tag of $6,000, plus allowances, of course.

Of his success, George is very low-key, simply saying, "I'm happy to get number 6,000, but, now, there's the bugle and it's time to go after number 6,001 -- and beyond!"

Stay away from the Booze "Nap" all will be fine, just think of Pocono (2007/2008) and your suspension. :toast:

FREEHOLD, N.J. -- The nation's leading harness driver and two other top drivers at Freehold Raceway have been suspended for six months and fined $500 each as a result of "unsatisfactory" performances last month.

The New Jersey Racing Commission handed down the penalties Saturday against George Brennan, the leading driver in North America, and Jim Morrill Jr. and Howard Parker, "due to a lack of effort."

The commission launched an investigation after a March 10 race generated "suspicious" wagering payoffs, officials said. In that race, Brennan finished last (eighth) on My Dream Come True, the 2-1 second choice. Parker on Bo Knows Matt (7-1) finished seventh, and Morrill was fifth on Neirda No, the 7-2 third choice.

The resulting trifecta paid only $92.50 although the No. 1 horse, World Class Storm, an 8-1 shot, won the race and the No. 3 horse, Letsgo Sparkle, a 29-1 shot, finished third. The favorite, the No. 2 horse, The Shawnster, also 2-1, was second. The 1-2 exacta paid $26.40 although the winner returned $19.

The judges learned that one bettor wagered heavily on the 1-2 exacta and the 1-2-3 trifecta. An investigation revealed that the bettor was Parker's chauffeur, who transported him from Freehold to the Meadowlands daily.

The bettor earned $24,000 for his wagers, but has been unable to collect $6,000 because the judges ordered the pari-mutuel windows closed when they became suspicious of the payouts. The bettor, who was not identified, has hired an attorney to have the winnings released.

Saturday, March 15 by Tim Second,,,,,,,? day off 4 me

Meadowlands Race #1 **Clyde Hirt Stake 1st Leg, 1st Division**
#8 Bukentine Hanover (5-2) Was very sharp last time out scoring first-over with a last quarter of :26.3 giving this gelding his 9th lifetime win. He gets Tetrick once again and should be a major contender. #3 See And Ski (2-1) came back ready last time out when making his 4 year-old debut. He scored from post 8 after battling much of the way leading.

The Play: $10 Exacta 8-3 Cost: $10

Meadowlands Race #3 **Clyde Hirt Stake 1st Leg, 2nd Division**
#8 Avatartist (9-2) will debut for the Sullivan barn after very game tries at Woodbine. He had won 7 times in 2013 and banked just under $80,000 last year. This gelding has early speed and should be a major player here. Dave Miller has the assignment.

The Play: $10 to win and place #8 Cost: $20

Meadowlands Race #11 **Clyde Hirt Stake 1st Leg, 3rd Division**
#9 Wake Up Peter (7-5) was winless in 19 starts last year chasing the top 3-year-olds and earning over $307,000. This year he has been sensational, winning all three of his races and taking a 1:50 mark two starts back. He will be short priced, but long on talent and the one to beat.

The Play: $4 Exacta 9/67 Cost: $8
