Thanks .. what confused me is in horses "the field" can be a handful of horses.
FIELD- The horses in a race. FIELD HORSE (or MUTUEL FIELD)- Two or more starters running as a single betting unit, when there are more entrants than positions on the totalisator board can accommodate.

I switched channels from soccer to horses and switched back
a couple of minutes later, and Liverpool had just scored .. watched pot never boils! : )
