McCain Launches New Site
If you're not sure Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) is running for president in 2008, check out the new website for his leadership PAC, Straight Talk America.
Corzine Extends Lead in Final Days
The latest Quinnipiac poll of the New Jersey governor's race shows Sen. Jon Corzine (D-NJ) with a 12 point lead over Doug Forrester (R), 50% to 38%.
Quote of the Day
"I confess surprise that a man so dreadfully intellectually and morally challenged as George W. Bush would want a person as intellectually gifted, independent and morally principled as Sam Alito on the bench."
-- Princeton professor emeritus Walter Murphy, who taught Alito in college, quoted by the Washington Post.
Dean Winning Praise on Capitol Hill
DNC Chairman Howard Dean "appears to be gaining the confidence of Congressional Democrats after 10 months on the job," Roll Call reports.
"Even Dean?s one-time detractors on Capitol Hill are giving the former Vermont governor unexpected praise, saying he?s growing smarter about his role and toning down his sometimes incendiary remarks. They add that Dean has done what previous DNC chairmen failed to do: spend time mobilizing Democratic voters, building networks and relationships, and looking beyond the White House for Democratic opportunities."
DeLay Tries to Retain Power
Rep. Tom DeLay's (R-TX) "efforts to retain power despite his indictment have angered some rank-and-file Republicans, many of whom say his ethical problems and uncertain status are staining them and destabilizing GOP unity," the Washington Post reports.
"Although he was forced to relinquish his leadership post Sept. 28, after the first of two indictments for alleged involvement in money laundering related to the 2002 Texas election, DeLay continues to use an office in the leadership suite, occasionally presides over private meetings with committee chairmen and lobbies members during key floor votes."
