Secret tapes show Bush's concern over past
WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Bush was concerned "his mistakes as a youth" would disqualify him from running for the nation's highest office, said an old friend who secretly recorded private conversations in which Bush appears to acknowledge past drug use.
"I don't want any kid doing what I tried to do 30 years ago," Bush said in recordings made when he was governor of Texas and aired Monday on ABC's Good Morning America. "And I mean that. It doesn't matter if it's LSD, cocaine, pot, any of those things, because if I answer one, then there will be another one. And I just am not going to answer those questions. And it may cost me the election."

The recordings were made by Doug Wead, a former aide to George W. Bush's father, in the two years before the younger Bush became the Republican nominee for president in 2000.

Wead told The Washington Post that he recorded the tapes in Texas, where it is legal to record telephone conversations as long as one party is aware of it. Wead now lives in Haymarket, Va.

"I think it bothered him ? the fact that when he was younger he was irresponsible," Wead said in an interview on the ABC program. "I think early on he felt disqualified, that he couldn't run for office because of his mistakes as a youth."

White House press secretary Scott McClellan said Sunday that the president does not dispute the content of the tapes. McClellan would not comment further, other than to say they were "casual conversations that then-Governor Bush was having with someone he thought was a friend."

Wead also played some of his recordings for a New York Times reporter. The newspaper reported Sunday that they show Bush crafting a strategy for navigating the tricky political waters between Christian conservative and secular voters. He repeatedly worried that evangelicals would be angered by a refusal to bash gays and that secular Americans would be turned off by meetings with evangelical leaders, the newspaper reported.

Wead said he didn't intend for the tapes to become public in his lifetime, but he was forced to release them by his publisher. Wead is the author of The Raising of a President: The Mothers and Fathers of Our Nation's Leaders, which was published by Atria and went on sale last month.

Wead said he made the tapes as a historical record. He denied that he released them to make money or sell books.

"This book could have been released before the election, driven by partisan sales," Wead said. "The publisher wanted it. I wouldn't let it, and my publicist told me at the time, 'That cost you a million dollars.'"

I thought the part ware he worried about Steve Forbes was interesting. Saying he gets the nod I'm not backing him. That's real back the party politics. I don't get the nod I'm taking my ball and going home. That's about how he acts now. If he does not get his way he cries about it.

Bush mistakenly thought Wead was his friend. .....there are so many jokes in that, no point in even starting. :)

I am with SixFive on this one. Who among us didn't know he led a not so pure youth? I think there is more to this then meets the eye. Why are they playing it up so big? Nothing new here.

Seriously, how surprising is this to you? In his late twenties, early thirties, everyone knows he had a good time. He was wealthy, good looking, Yale grad, who liked to booze it up. Anybody who thinks he boozed and didnt smoke and dabble in the booger sugar is just naive. He was a rich white collar frat daddy, they go hand in hand. His daughters are the same way he was when he got out of college.

Seen some of tapes and yet to see anything that contradicts what he has said publically. Can't see yet where he has done -"the flop" on an issue yet which is remarkable--of course we there is a lot we haven't seen yet but I'm sure the liberal media has dug into most that is suspect and if this is all they find they are doing him more of favor than harm.

---and speaking of tapes--would have loved to have had recorder on when Jessie went to pray with Mr Bill on the evils of adultry--You got one with an illigitamate in the oven preaching to the other--Doubt there was any preaching going on --would lay odds they were watching porn and swapping names in little black books--historic case of blind leading the blind--
"Pray for me Jessie" quote of the decade
With each being a liberal icon of their own race you have to wonder why the dems are scratching their heads that they got trumped on morals issues in the elections.

Of course if were being truthful. If this was Clinton we would eat him alive. Some how Bush gets a pass. But some of his remarks about MC Cain and Forbes does show his insecurity.

Just another coincidence I guess that the Fundamentalist Right gives Bush a free pass when - again - if this were on the other side It would be talked about to no end on Fox.

...and by the way, this is getting almost no exposure - rightfully so. I don't see the "Liberal Media" going nearly as nuts as what all the Fox programs would be doing if the roles were reversed.
