USC-bound O'Dea star Mays chosen for Army All-American Bowl
By Matt Massey

Taylor Mays is one of 78 players selected to play.

O'Dea senior Taylor Mays was announced during a school ceremony yesterday as one of 78 high-school football players selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl game Jan. 7 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Bowl officials presented the USC-bound Mays with a game jersey and baseball cap in front of teammates, coaches and faculty at O'Dea.

"He's a great player and a great kid, so it's definitely well deserved," O'Dea coach Monte Kohler said of Mays, the son of Stafford Mays, former University of Washington and NFL defensive tackle.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Mays plays wide receiver and defensive back, and returns kicks and punts for the third-ranked Irish. He will join Bellevue offensive lineman Stephen Schilling on the West roster. Schilling's selection was announced last week.

Mays was selected from a list of 400 players originally nominated. Other Washington state nominees were Ferndale quarterback Jake Locker, Ferris defensive lineman Cameron Elisara and Pasco offensive lineman Ryan Tolar. Locker, Elisara and Tolar all have made verbal commitments to attend the UW. Schilling is uncommitted.

"Taylor is arguably the best pure athlete on the entire West Coast," said recruiting expert Tom Lemming of Scout.com.

Mays has nine touchdowns this season in a run-oriented O'Dea offense.

The All-American Bowl will be televised live on NBC at 11 a.m. PST.
