What is the theory on what will actually happen if we pull out of Iraq? If your answer is "The terrorists will take over Iraq", please elaborate on what they will do.

I do not know enough about the situation there to give a good answer about the country.

I do know, however, that our soldiers will be removed from harms way and no longer be sitting ducks for motivated terrorists who can reach them easily. Our country will save billions/trillions/bazillions of dollars which will help all Americans in countless ways - in my opinion much more than being spent in Iraq. This could fund increases and repairs to existing military equipment and possible increase new enlistment numbers using non-lowered standards. It could give military personnel needed rest and not force some to remain in Iraq for lengthened duty, and allow us to reposition our soldiers in other important areas as needed (Afganistan, Iran - if need be, depending on your position), Africa (to help with the atrocities there - if need be), Pakistan, and how about our own Mexican border? Have them all ready to roll, rested, well-equipped, and better prepared to face terror and natural disasters to come.

If you don't want to pull everyone out of the country and bring them home, then at least reposition them within striking distance in another country or at sea, keeping them safe, better rested and prepared, and use them if need be.

Just a couple things that came to mind.

Thanks for the response Chad, but that is more of the benefits for the US (linked to us leaving). I'm looking for the detractors to paint the picture of what happens in Iraq and the Middle East once we leave.

I know. I apologize for my blatant liberal stab at the right. Thought I'd get it out of the way.

As for the country itself, I'd imagine it will blow up into a real mess...I just can't see it any other way. To hear many reports, the Iraqi government is not solid, the police and military not prepared to run a united country. There are plenty of oil riches that are at stake, and autonomy for various ethnic groups will also be at stake. When you add in other countries around Iraq, that have their own issues to put forth, and general terror groups that need a place to operate from, it just seems bleak to me. Whether we stay for 6 months, or 6 years, really. I honestly think this administration created a mess that will never work out well in the short or long term. And if we keep forces there to protect the interests that have been established since our takeover, then we will never really be out of the woods.

It'll probably be crime and drug free like Afghanistan was before the Americans got there, schools will be built and businesses will restart and Iraqis will stop dying like before the Americans got there and we can get these pigs off our telvsion sets. In reality WGAF.

Dan, I'll tell you why I give a f___. I give a f___ because I don't think the Middle East collapses on itself if we leave. I also don't think that terrorists take over the country and set up a land of terror. I think Iraq will rebuild itself and the vast majority of the attacks are over. Why do I believe this? Because I think the doom and gloom scenario is just another fabrication of the Bush administration. We brought the war to the Middle East, if we leave, so does the war. So in reality, I give a f___ because I don't think we need to be there any more and I don't think the situation will do anythng but improve for the Iraqis once we leave.
