Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Looking to book a trip there this summer with wife. Looking for a nice trip without breaking the bank. So many hotels for the about the same price.
ANy of your guys have an inputs about hotels? WE have went to the riu chain before but are looking for something different. Suggestions, must (not) do's , points of interests, recommendations.. all appreciated.

I know you didn't ask about it but there's a place in Playa del Carmen that my wife and I stayed at 2 years ago and you can't get any nicer than this place. Right now they have a deal that's 399 or 499 per room(5days 4 nights). So it's 499 total for you and your wife. It's all inclusive and you will not find a place with better food. Every meal we ate was not just good but great. I'm not sure how much the flights would cost but if the difference isn't any more than Costa Rica than I can promise you that it would be worth it. This place even has a pillow menu so you can choose what kind of pillow you want for the night.

Royal Playa del Carmen is the name of the place, I just talked to a rep last week because of their special. Royal Cancun has the same deal but it's only 399 for sure. I stayed at the one in Plays so that's the only one I can comment on.

thanks wood, but the last two vacation we took were to cancun and cabo san lucas. THe little lady wants to try something different, but i will take that place in mind for future mexican trip.

I understand, that's what we're doing right now. Looking for something different so if you don't mind letting us know where you go and how it was once you get back. It can be very hit and miss with these places.

We went to Punta Cana for part of our honeymoon. Stayed at the ME Majestic Elegance in Punta Cana with VIP which was worth it.

Words of wisdom: Take plenty of mosquito repellent, take money for tipping, upgrade to the Elegance Club-totally worth it (free internet, private beach, private pool, private lounge with snacks and beverages,and tequila party)


Went in June. Busy today but used cheapcaribbean.com and paid almost nothing in comparison to other places with same amenities.

Yes. It was very nice. The food was decent. Butler in room and also they do all the dining reservation for you in the Elite lounge. Free internet etc. Private everything and the guys will even climb the palm trees and get coconuts for your wife (I tipped them a $5 and they seemed appreciative)

Overall very nice for the money. The private pool and bali beds are neat. Basically you have the run of the resort.

I never made it to the casino but they do have black jack, etc...

Played golf at Punta Blanca? And it was very nice, they pick you up on a golf cart and take you on a nice ride across the properties. It was interesting to see where they hide all the staffers....

Do not leave the resort unless you have a guard.

Got another meeting but will give oyu more info tonight...

We stayed at the Dreams resort there last year...no complaints but pretty average...nothing really sticks out...I guess Im saying dont stay there :mj07:

We have done Playacar and Cozemel for about the last 7 years. We thought we would do something different so we were all set for Punta Cana last Feb but the airfare to Jamaica was about $500 cheaper.

We went to Jamaica in Feb and booked it again for this Feb. Again the airfare was cheaper than DR.

With what we save in airfare we book an extra nite.

Hey I've never been to a tropical isle and had a bad time. Have fun!!

Jamaica is the shizzle, loved it. Going to DR in November, should be fun I guess. I have to check out the itinerary again. Wife booked a lot of the stuff through work, 9 days I believe, I think it's Punta Cana too so let me know how it is. It was expensive because we booked 6 people. Both set of parents going too.

Stayed at the Excellence resort in Punta Cana last year. It was reasonably priced and pretty decent in my mind. If you do any of the excursions off of the resort, book through one of the travel type companies that have desks at the resorts. Don't book from any guy just walking a long the beach, heard some horror stories from other guests.

Woodson had a good point about the tipping. Just bring a ton of singles. Also be sure to pack some pepto.

Stay away from the casinos, a bit shady in my mind.

If you're going to the Dominican Republic, stay at Blackbeard's. You'll love it. Also plan on getting a good divorce attorney asap.
