Wyoming's Jacob Doss faces a hostile crowd at an ACC venue, while opponent starts his first home game

LARAMIE - There are many similarities between the University of Wyoming and Virginia football teams.

Both run 3-4 defenses, and both lost personnel at key positions from last season's squads.

The two teams, which play at 1:30 p.m. MDT today at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Va., also have first-year starting quarterbacks.

Those quarterbacks - UW junior Jacob Doss and Virginia senior Christian Olsen - made their first starts since they were in high school last week.

Doss hopes for a similar outcome this week: He threw for 209 yards and three touchdowns in a 38-7 home win over Utah State.

Olsen, on the other hand, is looking for something else. He was 17 of 34 for 133 yards with an interception that was returned for a touchdown in a 38-13 loss at Pittsburgh.

The two quarterbacks and their teams face new and different tests today.

"That was my first home game, and this will be a hostile environment, and the crowd will be on my back being at an (Atlantic Coast Conference) school with 60,000 people," Doss said. "Early on we will be similar to the first game - slow things down, get my feet wet. Get hit a little bit.

"But as the game goes on, I think the coaches have confidence in me, knowing that I will throw the ball away instead of forcing it. They will put a little more on my shoulders, at least it has been that way in practice. I'm ready for this challenge."
Doss said he was nervous for his first start since he was a senior at Lexington (Ky.) Catholic High in 2002. He said last Saturday's game was fast early on for him. He joked that in his first attempt on the first play of the game, the coaches told him his three-step drop was the fastest they ever had seen from him.

Virginia coach Al Groh said, "We frequently hear players when they get into games for the first time or the first time in a long time refer to how much faster the game is than anything simulated in practice. That is probably more dramatic at the quarterback position than at any other position.

"I thought from watching the film that (Doss) managed the game well. He made good decisions when he was under pressure, which is the best way to measure a quarterback."

Groh described Olsen's first start as "not good enough to win."

A transfer from Notre Dame who was a back-up the last two years with the Cavaliers, Olsen said he and his entire team need to put last week behind them and concentrate on UW.

"I put (the Pittsburgh game) out of my mind last Sunday and started concentrating on Wyoming," he said. "I know I have to improve pretty much everything about my game, and the same holds true with our team.

"It was just one game, and I know we have a good team. But I do know we won't be surprised by (UW's) defense. We run a 3-4, so that should help us a little."

Virginia has posted winning seasons in four of Groh's five seasons and has played in four straight bowl games. Last season the Cavs beat then-No. 4 Florida State at home and won the Music City Bowl 34-31 over Minnesota.

But the losses of quarterback Marques Haggans and running back Wali Lundy have hurt Virginia, along with an injury to senior wide receiver Deyon Williams. Virginia also starts a freshman, two sophomores and two juniors along the offensive line.

UW coach Joe Glenn said, "They're trying to find somebody to make some plays for them."

He added those plays could come from big wide receivers in senior Fontel Mines (6-foot-4, 220) and sophomore Kevin Ogletree (6-2, 189).

This will be UW's first-ever game in Virginia and the first game against an ACC member since it beat Florida State 28-20 in the 1966 Sun Bowl. Back then, Florida State wasn't in the ACC.

Last season UW won at a Southeastern Conference school for the first time 24-10 over Ole Miss. Can the Cowboys add the ACC to its list of non-conference conquests?

"We've got to be mature about it," said UW sophomore running back Wynel Seldon, who had a game-high 99 yards against Utah State. "We need to stay focused, even during the travel part, in the hotel, at the practice when we get there. Just stay focused and play Cowboy football."

Glenn said he read in the Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch that UW is a "gimme game" for Virginia. Glenn responded that he doesn't think so.

"I don't think this is a two-inch putt for them," he said. "It will be a real good game, and Wyoming will represent real well."

Injury report

Senior linebacker Marcial Rosales (hip flexor) and senior running back Ivan Harrison (knee) are out.

Redshirt freshman cornerback T.J. Atwater (hamstring) will be in uniform but likely won't play. Sophomore tight end Chris Sundberg will play despite having blood in his urine earlier in the week.

Weather forecast

Temperatures will be in the 80s under sunny to partly cloudy skies. Humidity levels will be in the 60 to 70 percent range with little chance for rain.
