Evansville was PUTRID, AWFUL, HORRIFIC among other things a year ago. That being said they return the same core team - see the enclosed assessment:

Yahoo! Sports Jan 12, 4:17 am EST

Getting Inside

Where Evansville fits into the MVC race may be determined over the next three games. All are at home, with two matchups against contenders sandwiched around Indiana State. Should the Aces hold serve against Northern Iowa and Creighton, they will be well positioned to escape the lower half of the MVC standings.

The home games are crucial because the Aces are still shaky on the road. They are 1-2 in the MVC games away from his this season. They won at Indiana State to snap a 16-game MVC road skid. However, they have not won two straight on the road against MVC teams since 1998-99.

For Evansville to keep winning, senior guard Jason Holsinger must regain his shooting touch. He is Evansville?s primary outside shooter and opponents are making it difficult for him to get open shots. Holsinger is 5-of-24 from 3-point range in his past four games. He has 33 threes this season; no other Ace has more than nine.

Putting more pressure on Holsinger, and leading scorer Shy Ely, is Evansville?s lack of depth. The Aces go seven deep and reserves play sparingly after that. Four starters play 27 or more minutes. Coach Marty Simmons depends largely on freshmen and sophomores off the bench.

If the Aces can win these next three, they are part of the race. A loss or three may doom them to a bottom four finish in the Valley.

Notes, Quotes

? Evansville is 10-0 at Roberts Stadium entering a three-game home stand. Evansville?s 1989 NCAA Tournament team went 15-0 at home.

? Beating Evansville likely requires keeping senior Shy Ely off the line. He shot eight or more free throws in five straight games before Southern Illinois didn?t allow him one in a 70-63 win on Jan. 10. Entering the game, Ely had scored 30 percent of his points at the line.

Quote To Note: ?That?s kind of been our ticket to whatever success we?ve had to this point, is getting on the floor and being blue-collar.??Evansville coach Marty Simmons.

Strategy And Personnel

Freshman guard Kaylon Williams is establishing himself as one of the Valley?s best newcomers. In five MVC games, he averages a conference-leading 6.2 assists, 6. 2 rebounds and 2.0 steals. He has started 11 straight games for the Aces and gives them a tough, physical guard who can rebound and defend.

Player Rotation: Usual starters?F Nate Garner, F Shy Ely, C Pieter van Tongeren, G Kaylon Williams, G Jason Holsinger. Key subs?F James Haarsma, G Kavon Lacey.
