How do local bookies make just their juice , if no one is on the other side of the game ?

Do lots of locals risk taking the bets against you ?

Not sure how this works , and would love to know .

Thanks .

Vast Majority of locals have so many squares playing into them that it really doesn't matter. If there is a case where the get real heavy on a side they can always lay it off with someone else or they can send it offshore in most cases at a better number if they know what they are dong.

Thanks .

So basically they only make money when they have someone on both sides of the game?

What I do, is take a look at the game and give it a quick once over myself. If it looks like these idiots are on the correct side I will even it up by placing a wager or two offshore to cover myself. Most of the time I roll the dice and let it ride in hopes of them being wrong.

When I do place the wager off shore, I usally go for about 75% of what the money coming in is at. That way, it will minimize the losses, while still giving myself a chance to make a few bucks.

The best however, is when you can middle it and cash in both sides!

Yup, the guaranteed money is when you are even. Now, with so many games and action everyday, there are many days when you come out ahead or behind a lil. In the end it all evens out and you end up ahead. Even the books post a loss after some weekends.

See Marine is doing it right and if he has players that dont know anything about line value then he really has it made. Juice up the favorits a little get banged on a side then send it offshore for a middle or a little better number.... If you think bookies get even action you are sadley mistaken. Those days are long gone in most cases.

Yes that is correct, and a few more bucks are made from parlays and such type plays. Now as to who has what connections and so on. The less you know about that better of you are. With Marine laying off to off shore sites thats great. But some smaller towns have a network you can not believe. It can spread through out half a state. Others have layoffs out in vegas they call.

parlays are like a used car sometimes. They are great for business! L*
Once inawhile when I get a new guy in the mix who gets down early I bring up the option of parlays and their bigger payout. Sometimes I feel bad, but I do NOT push it on them. I merely point them out to the guy as a way of trying to get some bucks back. Now, don't think my mouth isnt watering at the thought of a guy who can consistently go 2-10 on a weekend wanting to make some big parlays and teasers...

And yes, the networking with some people is amazing. Most of the time the only time one woul dreally need that is when you are tryign to collect from a stiff. Then it is always helpful to have some other people to do things for you. But my preference has been the "mom and pop" store approach. Less people involved means less cuts to others and less chances of someone else getting stupid and getting me in trouble.

Hey Marine, Gold cup, and DJV: When I used to book, I always knew what players would be on what sides. If John A is a favs bettor and likes the Dukes, Kansas, etc and John B is a dog player (well you get the picture)

Do you guys adjust the lines based on who calls?? Just curious. I did and it paid off. Just wondering if you guys "ADJUST" your lines based on the caller?????? :D

mostly I do not... wel, mostly I dont really need to with the bunch that donate to me.

If I were to watch espn an hour before a televised game I could probably tell you where the money was going to go with most of these putzes.

But on occassion, if some dummy calls up and says "hey what is the line on Duke tonite?" I have no problems bumping him up a point or two to get that lil extra edge.

Usaually with me, it was the opening question (Like you said) that would sway me. Had some big hitters form New England and for the most part, 80% of the time I knew which way thet were going on a game.

It was the "putzs" that would ask," What do you have on Kansas tonight" More often than not I knew who would be betting what.

Good luck, my friend, from the Aloha State!!! ;)

The last thing local guys are looking for is even action. At 10 percent juice you need a hell of a lot of action to make money just on the vig. If they get to much action smart ones lay some off.
I have booked and now I moonlight for a book and all I can tell you Is that if the favorites lose the book wins.

So Cal
I know a couple of books and they only lay off bets that can hurt them. Since most will never give true odds (horses for dd's, exactas, triples. etc.) they usually don't have too much to worry about. If the action is one-sided enough, they may lay off some of it, but most don't hve enough clients or enough time to balance the ledger. Most books also front parlay cards (at least in So Cal) and always make a killing on those. Talked to one guy that hasn't had a losing year on parlay cards in last 18 years. They don't do too bad; that is why they can pay commission to agents on top of everything else. I have guys that have offered me 30% commission for horse players! Only guys I know that have had problems are because they are players themeselves.
