I realize there has to be a reason for this because it always happens, but why exactly don't guys wait until after their teams are done playing to take another coaching job? Is the less-than-a-month between the Big 12 title game and the national title game really that vital to recruiting that they have to take the job immediately? I would think saying "hey, look at my defense that just won a national title" would be more valuable than leaving early and seeing your team win it anyway, which gives off the impression the team could've done it with or without you.

Bob and Venables are the real coaches for the OU defense. OU wont miss a beat without Mike - as will become real clear when he maintains the Mildcats basement status

It has to do with the recruiting deadlines. The system is really screwed up. Because of the way the deadlines work, coaches have to announce they are going to leave before the season ends. It isn't their fault, it is the system's shortcomings.

The word in OK is that Mike will coach this week and then recruit at AZ during recruiting period. But, when the dead period resumes, he will return to OU and help with bowl game preparations.
