Question on attic insulation

I live in northeast - cold winters. in my attic right now i have 3 inches of blown in insulation . i would need 11 inches more blown in to get it to R-38 equivilent. 1000 square feet.

Any idea of price to have it done? Ballpark?

What if i do it myself? - (Never happen)

No insulation on underside.

i had a wall busted out in bedroom to make the master bedroom bigger since all the kids are grown and on their own. The contractor went up in attic to run a wire and said that we need some insolulation up there. he does not do insolation so i figured he was not giving me a line.

i know i got to get three estimates but beleive it or not, I am finding it hard to find people who do insulation work. took me a couple of weeks to find this guy.

I just moved into a new house that has blown-in insulation and also the sheets of insulation nailed to the underside of the roof. It is very energy efficient. Also have double paned windows.

A family member just had their attic done on an older house so I will ask what was done and how much it cost and get back to you.

According to a very good carpenter I know:

"If you bought it at lowes and did it yourself you could do it for less than $400. If the $1200 includes labor to do it, then it is not too bad a price. A bag cost $8 and will do 40 square feet at R19. So at R38 it would do 20 square feet."

I just saw this, but what the Hippo said is fine...
Let me add, that depending on where you live, will require a certain amount of venting. You dont want ice-damning which will end up costing you alot more. Try this, go to the area where new homes are going up during the week, and find one or two trucks advertising their insulation company, go in and talk to the guys blowing the ceiling, and ask them how much to do your attic for cash :SIB
