....Randall to start: Miley named right-hander Scott Randall to start Tuesday's series opener against the Chicago Cubs at Great American Ball Park.
Randall, who'll make his first Major League start, also will become the 16th different pitcher to start a game for the Reds this season, setting a franchise record. They used 15 in 1912 and 1945.
Cincinnati's braintrust also considered left-hander Dan Serafini and right-hander Matt Belisle to face the Cubs, who are competing fiercely with Houston for the National League Central Division title. But Serafini is 0-3 with a 6.17 ERA, and the 23-year-old Belisle has thrown a career-high 176 2/3 innings, including 171 1/3 in the minors before ascending to the Reds on Sept. 7.
The opening in the rotation was created when right-hander Seth Etherton (2-4) left Wednesday's start in Pittsburgh after one inning with discomfort in his throwing forearm.
Despite a 2-3 record with a 6.75 ERA, Randall has impressed the Reds during his 13 relief appearances. "His ball moves a lot," Miley said.
Though Randall has pitched exclusively in relief with Cincinnati, he has primarily been a starter throughout his nine-year professional career. Of his 226 minor-league appearances, 196 were starts, including 20 this year in 30 appearances with Triple-A Louisville.
"I threw a lot of pitches in my last game [78 in a 3 1/3-inning relief stint Thursday at Pittsburgh], so I figure that's built me up a little bit," Randall said.
Randall faced Chicago twice in last weekend's series at Wrigley Field, allowing three runs in a total of one inning. He said he might try to throw more changeups against the Cubs this time around.....
from the Cinci Inquirer:
"TUESDAY STARTER: The Reds chose Scott Randall to start against the Cubs Tuesday.
Randall started 20 games at Triple-A Louisville this season and 196 during his professional career, but he has pitched exclusively in relief since being called up Aug. 26.
"I'm still going to stick with what I do, try to get ground balls," said Randall, who is 2-3 with a 6.75 ERA in 13 appearances with the Reds......"
