Atlanta (24-22-10, 58 pts) is currently in ninth place in the Eastern Conference and trails the eighth place team by one point. The Thrashers have not played well since the beginning of the New Year and will need to pick it up if they want to stay in the playoff picture. They have just four wins since the start of the new calendar year and have lost four in a row going into Friday?s game with New York.

Most recently, the Thrashers lost 5-4 to Toronto on Monday. They played without Freddy Meyer (upper body), Tobias Enstrom (finger) and Jim Slater (concussion) and Freddy Modin left the game with an upper-body injury. Dustin Byfuglien scored a power-play goal in the first period and leads the team with 42 points.

New York (29-23-4, 62 pts) will also need to pick it up if they want to stay in the playoff race. The Rangers, who are in seventh-place in the Eastern Conference, are 4-8-1 in their last 13 games and have lost five in a row going into Friday?s game. The Rangers? five-game winless skid is their longest of the season.

The Rangers lost 3-2 to Detroit on Monday. Goaltender Martin Biron started his second straight game ahead of Henrik Lundqvuist and stopped 32 shots. Head coach John Tortorella said he had ?no idea? who would get the start against Atlanta.
