Jose Contreras makes his first major league start on Friday in place of David Wells, who will miss his turn in the rotation because of a calf injury. Contreras has made eight appearances out of the bullpen this season, posting a 1-1 mark with an 8.74 ERA.

The righthander has been solid since returning from the minors last week, as the Cuban hasn't allowed a run in his last five innings out of the bullpen.

Contreras will face the Tigers for the first time in his career.

The Tigers have dropped their last two games and are coming off an 8-2 setback to the Cleveland Indians in the rubber match of their three-game set Wednesday.
