Ole Miss defensive tackle Peria Jerry had arthroscopic surgery on Monday afternoon to repair a torn lateral meniscus in his right knee.
Ole Miss gave no timetable for the senior?s return, though nose tackle Ted Laurent recently had a similar injury and is expected to miss about a month.
Jerry injured the knee during Sunday?s practice, which was closed to the media.
Jerry?s setback continues a rash of bad fortune for the Rebels? defensive line. Junior Greg Hardy, who led the Southeastern Conference last season with 10 sacks, is already out for 6-8 weeks because of a stress fracture in his foot.
Between Jerry, Hardy and Laurent, three-fourths of the projected defensive line has missed substantial time because of injuries. Backups Chris Bowers, LaMark Armour and Justin Sanders have also missed time with various ailments.
But losing Jerry is particularly painful, as Nutt had pegged the preseason All-SEC selection as was of the team?s leaders and most important players.
?We?re thankful a ligament was not involved, and we?re glad Peria will be back this season,? said Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt in a released statement. ?We?ve had a bad injury bug to our defensive line this preseason. Fortunately, we feel none of the injuries have been season ending, and we?re looking forward to getting everyone back.?
